Default 2006 Arctic Cat battery draining

I have a 2006 400 TRV with only 71 miles on it. Sat a few months since ice fishing and battery was dead. Trickle charged without disconnecting. Started right up. Next day bat was dead again. Took battery in, load tested it, recharged it. Put in back in, started right up. Next morning battery was drained again. Had key out of ignition, nothing left on. Could this be a bad relay or ? Have had issues with display; fuel gauge not reading right, going out when cold, needle wacking out.

Usually when I suspect the battery is the issue I totally remove it from the machine and trickle charge it with 2 amps for about 12hours.

Then I check the battery charge with my volt meter and it should be over 12 volts after charging.

Then I let the battery sit for at least 24hours checking the battery charge every 3-6 hours.

Sometimes, when not hooked to anything the charge drops slightly, it is still over 12V but drops a bit. If after sitting for 24 hours your battery has dropped to less then 12V it is bad. Last time after just 8 hours the battery was about 10.9V which is useless.

Your elec instrument cluster will cause it to drop faster if it is bad.

If your battery checks out then I would check to see if there is a short in the wire supplying juice to the clock in the cluster or the hot wire to the selenoid.

Hope this helps.

I'm with Swampy on this one it could be a bad selenoid , i would do as Swampy did trickle charge the battery with the cables disconnected and check the voltage with a multi meter the next day , my 2006 AC 400 FIS Auto's battery didn't last a year and a half when i had to replace it , the problem with my old battery was that i let it sit up for a week or more in between ride's and the internal clock would drain the battery , if you have to replace your battery get one of the unvented maintence free one ; and by all mean's get a good battery tender with a 1 to 2 amp charger !

I use the Shumacher 1 amp on all my lawn & garden and atv batteries and when i check the battery after a full charge if it's good i get 12.85 volt's with the cable's unhooked , and with cable's hooked up with the engine running i get 14.58 volt's ; i always checked my truck and car batteries for a short curcuit in the wiring harness when hooking the ground cable first and the positive will have a small spark when i touch the cable to the battery post , this is a dead giveaway when you have short !

It's a little harder to test the atv the same way because of the internal clock bulit into the LCD Pod , the engine time clock doesn't draw juice from the battery without the engine running ; but the regular time clock draw's juice even with the key in the off position , i hope this help's you locate your problem !

Something else i had to do to my 06' 400 was to replace all the hard plastic fuel and vacume hose the first 6 month's instead of what the owners manual called for mine just started splitting on me , which would let the fuel drain back down the choke/fuel/ienrichner system on these Quads ; the Manufacturer should have left the old time tested choke alone ( that's just my opinion anyway ) !

Sorry for the novel i just had to vent a little since i haven't had much time with the PC lately , and Swampy it's good to see you're still on the ball ; have a good one to all !
