Default Electrical Issue (need help)

So I was working on a friends arctic cat 300 and while jump starting it, inadvertantly hooked up the cables incorrectly on the atv battery. I smoked one of the leads coming from the voltage regulator...melted wires, smoke the whole thing...I know rookie mistake. The atv will run now when the jumper cables are hooked up correctly but as soon as I remove the cables it dies. I am assuming in addition to melting the wires that I fried the voltage regulator as well. Before I spend the 200 bucks on a new voltage regulator, has anyone done this (that they would admit) and what if any other damage have I done.
Thanks for the help
Craig

Look on tradebit.com for a service manual, most have a series of steps in the correct order to eliminate whats working versus what is not

I have done this before, I know bone head move, After I bought a new voltage regulator and Battery and found a burnt ground wire, hidden by all the black tape they used. It ran great, if you have a burned wire use the same gauge wire, Good luck!!! Let us know how you make out
