I was one of the guys that went riding with cowboy. I got to watch the front end on his 'Cat work, and it works very well. I've seen the front end of the Traxter work also, and between the two the AC hooks up faster and with more authority. Its the closest thing to "true" 4WD that I've seen in a limited slip front differential. Between the Kodiak and the AC, I would personally pick the AC500. But then again I'm one of those people who believes bigger is better! Seriously though, If a guy is going to do alot of trail riding the Kodiak is better, its smaller in size and more manuverable. If work is what you do mostly, you can't beat the AC.

Forgive me with this one, do you mean any advantages of the 500 auto vs. the 500 manual, or the 500 in general vs. the 400? For the 500 vs. 500, I'd say it's just a matter of personnal preference. Both machines have excellent engine breaking-one of the best on the market. In low range on hills, you'll find yourself actually giving it gas to get down. The new '01 model 500's are basically the same, with the exception of the auto/man. choice. So, like I said, it's your own opinion there.

As for the 400/500 decision, obviously you have a 100 cc gain in "stated" engine size (400 is actually a 37?, 500 is a 493), plus the option of switching into 2wd on the 500's. I love the option of switching to 2wd, and if I were to buy another quad today, it would definately have that feature. I use it that often. Other than that, I can't think of any major differences. The 400 uses the same frame as the 500, along with the same diff's, etc. The '01 model 400's have all the same changes that the 500's got-the upgrade to the same features as the '00 Auto. Some say the steering feels lighter on the 400, though I can't comment on that myself. There are a couple guys on here who have both the 400 and 500 'Cat and would be much better at giving a good evaluation between both machines than I. One thing I do know, the ease and simplicity of the auto is awesome. Oh, I think the 400 may have narrower tires up front than the 500, but can't remember for sure.

Oops, sorry, didn't mean to offend you with that remark about my "lil ol 500" putting out more torque than the MIGHTY 600 GRIZZ, heh heh heh But wait a minute, seems like I remember something about you having a "true" locked four wheel drive??? Seems to me, that's even better than the other guys, I think you know who So did you make it out on the trails yet with the new locked front end??? Well, think I'll just send you a note instead of taking up board space...

 

You've got that right! I don't have to hold any buttons in reverse so I have 4WD, and I don't have to slip anything to have my front wheels working at all times in 4WD, to top it off, I have four wheel engine braking thats about as tight as a manual tranny! I'd hook up and do a tug of war with you, but with that torque monster that you ride I would probably lose anyway.

Well I would like to add to what Cowboy said.
The 500s have: larger racks, Better foot brakes, better carbs, sturdier looking front bumper, and I believe the 500s have a different rear axle that allows for more ground clearance verses the Ac 500.

The ac 400 has a 371 cc motor. Thats a total of 122 less cc's than the ac 500. Roughly 8 horse power(about 30%) less than the Ac 500, and alot less low end torque.

BTW: The AC 500 gives up 102cc's to the Grizzly.

 

In a drag race those extra 102cc's will make themselves known.
