burned out 2 regulators
I'm working on a 99 arctic cat 500 4x4. Original rectifier had melted wires and was not charging the battery. Replaced it with a new one from Rick's and was fine for one trip. After that it developed a misfire, by turning on headlights miss would go away. Soon afterward it would misfire anytime you would accelerate. I unplugged the rectifier and the misfire is completely gone. The rectifier tested bad on one leg and stator tested fine, no shorts and producing proper voltage. My question is do I have a bad short, or did I get a bad rectifier.

Could be a faulty regulator, but you can do a generalized stator test by checking that the stator charge coil wires have some resistance between each other and no wire shorts to ground. Best way is to go through the tests the manual shows. Here's a free service manual link. Hope it works. Zippyshare.com - 99 ATV Service Manual-S.pdf

I couldn't open link, probably my computer. Stator tested good, getting voltage real close to normal, and could not find a short to ground. Thinking about getting another aftermarket rectifier and using it more often and see what happens. Hate to spend close to $300.00 for a A.C. rectifier.
