Default Arctic Cat 300 update.

So i did sell the "Parts quad" it was locked up. rusted cylinder. Cleaned it up and my friend actually got it to run and that bore looked pretty pitted. But hey we'll see how long she'll go. Now for mine.

I know these use the Suzuki 300 engine. Was there ever any aftermarket for these? cams? Ive read about a muffler mod for these? not sure what it is though.

So far the quad has treated me good. although its got some quirks. Every time you first start it up it fires right up and goes straight to a great idle. But if you give it gas it will blow a small cloud of white smoke and bog at first. give it a few revs and it will clear the smoke right up and rev great. But it does this every first start of a day. Is it overloading when its first started? The choke is inoperable because someone broke the choke off in the carb then tried to drill it out. so i went through the top of the carb and sealed the circuit from the top. the hole that pulls through the cv. so it should be acting like choke off right? it did seem to help how it ran once warm. it occasionally bogs and usually a few revs will clear it back up. and i do see some black smoke when it bogs usually. I know it needs a new carb ideally. but the only carbs that say they are specifically for this atv come up like 400$. Their are alot of carbs that look identical from other quads like hondas and kawasakis that are from 50-100$ . Is the arctic cat one so much money cause of the brand of the atv?

This quad goes pretty great on everything so long as its able to get the traction. it does alright in the slick stuff for a 2x4. The low range helps it turn the 25" ITP blackwaters pretty good in the really deep things. sometimes too good. I have noticed its problem is when it gets into deep enough stuff to bottom the quads frame pan on the mud thats usually the end of its forward progress. So i did buy a 2.5" spacer lift. Thinking that will help it out on the bottoming some. ive got a winch for all the other situations. ill post some before and after of the spacer life and we'll see how much they really raise it,

Got some work done. My light bar came in and i was able(Barely) to install it between the head headlights. I also got my lift spacers in and got them installed. they definitely helped a bit with ride height. Rear end is pretty stiff now, but the front is still pretty flexible so its a trade off i suppose. Was a pain to install as i don't have compressors. But i made some "Compressors" and got creative. Looks good with the extra height now for sure. I went ahead and did my own muffler mod messing around. Don't think it helped that much, but its able to flow a bit better.

Only issues im still having is Im pretty sure i got my right CV axle going bad. And it still smokes a ton for the first few seconds of start up.

I thought what i was hearing before was my tire rubbing the plastics on the back, but now that their nowhere near close enough to rub it must be the CV. I had to pull out and take the motor end of the CV apart to put a boot on it like 2 weeks ago roughly because it had ripped the boot and it was leaking engine oil out do to the metal plug in the CV end popping out. Re-seated that plug and I've had no more leak problems. but im guessing having took the CV completely apart that i may have did it in then. its still sealed and full of grease. Just has play on that end and it pops, but only going forward and only when turning right. wont do it going left, wont do it in reverse. just forward right. Im gonna replace it soon. but does it sound typical of a bad CV?

Got some pics of the work ive done(minus the lift ill add some soon).

Check eBay for replacement axles. I've owned 400 and 500 Cats, they were very reliable. I put a Web Racing cam in the 500, btw. Gave it a fair bit more power, but I doubt you can get much more power out of a 300. Perhaps you can find a stock carburetor that has the choke working. Keep an eye on oil level and you may need to change the spark plug more often, with the pitted bore. Good luck with your Cat.

The bore in mine is okay. I was talking about the parts one i sold to my friend. Mines giving me fits lately. I think the carb is the culprit. Sometimes it runs out great other times (especially on inclines or at angles ) it wont rev. it will sit there and idle but any gas and it bogs out. if you take your hand and cover the air inlet to the air box though it will rev right up.

Anyone know the factory carb settings?

Hey, looks great! We had a similar idea on the light bar and I think it works perfect! I wired mine in replacement of the high beam lamps as I was worried about the current draw with the bar and the high beam bulbs at the same time so let me know if it works!

The white smoke on start up sounds like valve seals to me. Oil leaks into the cylinder while it's parked and then burns off when you start it up.

I do agree you have a carb issue too though. I'm still learning my way around this carb, but I had pretty good luck just pulling the bowl off, cleaning out all the jets and passages. Check the float height too. It's weird that it will blow black smoke when it bogs (rich), but will also increase RPM if you cut off the air flow (lean).

Check for air leaks too around the carb, intake and head. Good luck!
