Default Dvx 300/Kymco primary clutch

Our 2012 dvx 300 started slipping under hard acceleration, took belt cover off and noticed the primary was not centered on crankshaft. Removed nut which was very tight and noticed the splines are gone on the bore or the outter sheave. Splines in crankshaft are worn as well. Why did this happen, is it common? Seems like a poor design, all the torque is applied to aluminum splines approx 3/4" diameter. Far too costly to replace crankshaft, but outer shieve is only 50 bucks. Would locktight or similar help if splined fit is a bit loose.
