Stock Air Filter Question

T-Cat:
I'd probably keep the green for emergencies-as a spare or something in your box maybe? Yeah, I would keep using your stock blue foam. I hate to say it but you'll have to use a special foam air filter cleaner and oil to clean and oil it. Unfortunately gasoline, other solvents and such which may be used to clean things will deteriorate the foam filter much faster, allowing dirt and debris to get in easier. Also, you've got to use the foam filter oil to oil it with, as standard 30w oil will break it down faster too, and cause it to come apart at the rubber end pieces sooner. I just got the AC brand, as I didn't have time to shop around for other cheaper stuff. The cost of the AC cleaner was $4.73 for the can, and the oil was $3.79.
As for the K&N, like Taylor said, you can pick them up at any motorcycle shop most likely. Around here though, every Napa, Schucks, Al's-any automotive store has them too. They might not stock them, but can definately order them, usually overnight service for the same price. I've heard though that the K&N's do offer higher air flow rates, but at the risk of letting the really fine dust particles get into the engine easier. A lot of guys quit using them on their sport bikes, and switched to the Uni filter instead, again-like Taylor said.
Best of luck with your options there, if you do go with a Uni or K&N though, let me know what you think-if you notice any more power out of it? Some guys say "yeah, definately noticeable power", while others say "can't tell anything at all, seems to be working though". Take care,
Mike

I got to ride an AC 500 with Quaker State 4x4 in it and it shifted so smooth versus my other oils (Castrol GTX) that I'm switching over to Quaker State 4x4 asap. I found it amazing that it shifted so smooth. Very impressive.
About the filters, I would surely keep or swap to the newer foam filter if you didn't want to go with the K&N fitler. I think the Foam filter is much more durable than the old filter that was on the 99 and older bikes.

I put a K/N filter on my 2001 AC 500 manual and it really made a difference. It has alot more throttle response and significant power improvement in the low and middle ranges than the stock filter. I normally ride between 8,000-10,000 feet so this may be why I see the dramatic improvement. I do wonder about its actual filtering capability though as you can see right through it unlike the 2 stage foam filters. Right now I use the K/N when the trails are wet/damp and switch over to the blue stock filter if conditions get dusty. Does anyone know a web-site or chain store you can get the K/N pre-filter from?

Hello everyone.I am new to this forum and have a question.I live up here in central Onatario and have not been able to get the K&N Filter Kit for my 2001 500 Cat Auto.I hear a lot of talk about how good they are and would appreciate any information on an address where I might get one.Its a good thing I joined up here as I just looked at my Blue filter on my ride and thought it was supposed to be black like that.I only have 275 miles on it so I think I should be safe. Thanks in advance.

You can order the K&N filters on-line from: www.rockymountainatv.com
Just go to the catalog section and click on filter. You can get both the main replacement filter and a pre-filter for dusty conditions from the selection menu for Arctic Cat. It does say the filters are for 98-00 models, but the main filter did fit my 2001 500. I just ordered the pre-filter and hopefully it will fit too.

Your welcome CatSass! I have the 2001 500 manual regular edition (green). I hope you notice as much increase in performance as I did using the K&N. Like I said earlier, I ordered the pre-filter to use when the trails are dusty. Will let you know how it works out. I also replaced the stock CR6E spark plug with a CR7E and it seemed to help out too. Other people on the site have said they have noticed better performance upgrading to a CR8E for use in higher ambient temperatures.
Talk to you later, Good Riding!!!

I am glad I put on the K&N Filter and Pre-Filter cat3608.There is a big difference in all aspects of performance.I can even spin up those big Blackwaters now.I got everything from Rockymountain but had to order it by phone as I live up here in Canada and couldn't use my Master Card on the order form.It only took 9 days to get it but it was worth the wait.I've been riding a lot the last few days and everything works great. Thanks again for the help.Talk to ya later bud.Gotta go RIDE>Later Eh!!!
