I need to buy a gunboot for my rig.All I can seem to find are Kolpin products which seem to be of good quality. However I wonder if there are any others out there that any of you might recomend ?

Boggit-
I haven't seen any other gun boots other than Kolpin. They seem to be a nice unit, but one thing bothers me about mounting off the rear rack, with it sticking down towards the floorboard-rollover. If you happen to roll the machine down to the left, you won't be able to jump clear to the right, as the boot would be in the way. I've heard a few states have made it a law now that you have to carry a rifle in a fully closed case while riding-as in transporting a firearm now, similar to a car. I'm sure others may follow as well-I think Colorado was the first, but I don't know that for sure.

I've used the normal gun racks that mount on your handlebars, or racks, which work well, but really need to be mounted up front, or on the handlebars to keep all the dust and mud off your rifle and scope. My buddy put his on the back, we went to shoot, his eyepiece was a solid mudball-not a smart move! When hunting, I now just use my sling across my chest, or if the terrain is really rough getting to where I want to go, I'll run the "backpack" style sling across my back till I get through the tough stuff.

Anyway, if you're set on the gun boot, I think Kolpin is probably the way to go. It seems to be a good unit, they sure sell a ton of them and you see them everywhere. While they are kind of spendy, I'd probably go that route myself if our state required them.

Best of Luck, interested to hear what you come up with.

Mike

Cabela's has one in the Fall Catalog called an ATV Gun Protector Pro. It's only $49.99 and includes the mounting hardware. It doesn't look as durable as the Kolpin, but looks like it would work fine.

I too have the Kolpin gun boot. It does the job, sort of. It vibrates like crazy, the pin came out on my first trip and the inside looks to have good padding but it's really not well padded. But I have to agree with cowboy, the worst thing is you won't get off in a roll over and I doubt my gun would survive a roll over since it sticks up so far.

I saw an add for a different gun case that mounts on the front rack called the Justin Case. It's padded like a regular gun case and looks functional but may not hold longer guns. The photo shows it with 2 guns and with the lid closed it has a place on top to hold other gear held down with a cargo net. It is kinda pricey and I can't vouch for it but you might want to check it out.

Good luck

My partner has a Kolpin case on his Polaris only he mounted it on his front rack. You can get on & off either side easily, but the butt-end of the case sticks out way in front of the front bumper. If I put it that way on my AC 500, I would rip it off in a heartbeat, but he has had his that way for over 5 years.
