What oil ?
#1
I recently changed my oil for the first time. The oil I used was Quaker State 4X4 synthetic blend 10W-40 which I purchased from an auto store. It occurred to me afterward that I may need a specially formulated oil for 4 stroke engines. Does it matter since the AC is liquid cooled? Can I get away with using the "automobile" oil?
Thanks for the help.

I just switched to Quaker state 4x4 semi-synthetic blend myself, last oil change. After a dealer recommendation, and several positive posts from guys on here, I couldn't help but switch. It seems to be better for the engine, helps run cooler, and is cheaper too!
I think it is recommended to "break in" the machine with the standard AC oil, then after it's broke in, you can switch to the semi-synthetics. Something about using a synthetic oil for break in will cause premature wear as the rings won't seat properly because the synthetics are too slick-does that sound right???? Anyway, yeah, stick with that oil, you'll be fine.
Best of Luck,
Mike

I switched to the QS 4X4 15W-40 for the hot weather down here and man it has made a big difference in the shift feel on my 400 and 500 manuals. I'll switch back to the 10w-40 for the cooler monthes(ie december and january). I think most people have agreed to stay away from the realy light energy conserving oils due to the possibility of clutch slippage. Big rain all week means big mud all weekend!

I am using Amsoil motorcycle 10w40 synthetic. I used regular oil to break in until approx. 200 miles then changed to the synthetic. Also I just received literature that announced a new 0w40 Amsoil synthetic 4-stroke motor oil. Just have 350 miles on my 01' 500 manual, runs and works great.

My A-C mechanic says to make sure the engine is broke in before useing synthetics; not sure about syn-dino blends. The claim is made and well supported that when you go full synthetic, wear stops. That's a radical statement, but I've seen it discussed (argued?!) on several forums. The best was on Jeeps Unlimited, Grand Cherokee several months ago.
What I'm going to do is get at least three oil changes by the book, then go to Mobil One- it's the standard that all the others compare to, even Amsoil. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of good oil out there; Mobil One is my choice after a lot of research.
I had a great ride today- stuck twice and splashed enough water to get my belt slipping, and that is a first!

Well, I am on my last change of Castrol GTX. After riding ARCTIC500's Ac 500 with Quacker State 4x4 semi-synthetic in his I thought my bike was broken. Then he reminded me of the difference in oil and I decided right there that I was swaping. I went to walk mart and found a 9 pack of Quacker State 4x4 20w-50 for $13.50($1.50 a bottle) so I bought both cases and thats whats going in my cat on my next oil change.

it is true what they say about synthetic oils not allowing an engine to properly break in. my nephew read some literature on mobil one synthetic oil that stated that even in high revving engines like in top fuel dragsters engine wear was lessened and most engines could not be properly broke in.
maybe he read it wrong but he keeps on touting mobil one like a salesman.
