I was reading my most recent ATV magazine this weekend and they were talking about the new Suzuki Vinson 500. They said the engine had been redesigned and was more powerful. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the same engine that is in the AC lineup of 500's. If so, did the 2002 AC 500's get this more powerful engine?

Suzuki has always made the motors, but they never were identical. Before, Suzuki used an 8.5:1 compression ratio with Arctic Cat haveing a 9.1: or 9.5:1 compression ratio. I believe Suzuki went up to a 10.25:1 compression ratio for the Vision.

As for other differences-- I don't know. But we got our 2002 service manual in yesterday and I'm gonna try to look up the differences in the specs if there are any from 2001.

As a side question. How does one go about increasing the compression ratio when using the same engine block? I always wondered and was never sure about the technical aspect of it.

Thanks!

A couple of things can be done. I'm not sure what Suzuki did though. You can change the shape of the piston to compress the air/fuel mixture into a smaller volume. And I think you can change the stroke to do the same thing.

I build motors in my spare(hay, what spare time) time. One thing you can do is mill the head or the block to decrease the chamber volume(0.01" maybe). You can also use a thinner gasket to lower chamber volume. Smaller chambers on the cylinder head or a dome on the piston raise compression. You can also use flat faced valves that do not have a slight dish on the underside.

OK, this brings me to another question. What is the difference between the AC 400 and 500 engine block? Everything I've read seems to indicate that it's the same engine 'cept for the cylinder/piston. Is this correct? Has anyone modded their 400 to be a 500?

I was told by the Suzuki dealer last week that all the new Vinson's have been recalled. He told me he had 3 of them but Suzuki would not let him sell them because of the recall. Something about the driveshaft breaking in two. Just curious if anyone else heard this?

I have a 400 and a 500 and aside from the 400 being silver and the 500 being black I can't tell the difference except when you hit the trottle.

I have moved this post to the open forum as I was sorta getting off topic an thought it might be best to start a new post. Please respond to my post titled "Cat 400 4x4 vs 500 4x4"

How much of a difference? I'm trying to decide wether I really need the 500. I have a buddy that has a Honda 450 foreman (i think) and a couple of buddy's that ride Polaris'(not sure about their model of Polaris). I do want to be able to keep up with them on hill shooting and the like. I know that I'm not going to touch the top speed of the Polaris' with any of the 'Cats but I dont want to be left in the dust either. I know I'm definately gonna buy a 02 Cat and it either gonna be the 400 4x4 or 500 4x4 (although I hear the 375 is a pretty quick machine, but I want a manual shift). Could you elaborate?

Thanks!
