something catastrophic nearly happened to me today when i was dismounting my cat. it seems that when i pivoted my right foot on the floorboard my size 16 D red wing boot got stuck between the floorboard and the foot brake and as i swung my left foot over the cat i almost fell down. i might have broke my foot if i fell on my ***. damn, atvs can be hazardous even when they are not moving...at least for me and my big *** feet.

Those foot brakes can be a pain. I can remember my winter boots getting stuck every now and then... and I wear a size 10. Earlier this summer I decided to remove the foot brake assembly all together. I have a 2001 AC500 manual and the foot brake is all mechanical/cable operated. It would just rattle and collect mud. Would barely slow the bike down even if I stood on it, so off it came!
I kept the assembly incase I sell the bike one day, to keep it legal.

I agree with 100%, the mechanical foot brake is junk. Mine just rattles and wastes foot room space. I tried stopping the AC with it just for fun and learn how weak it truly is.

I'm not from Texas, but i always get on and off the Cat just like a horse. From the right side. doing that will avoid the problem of your foot catching under the foot brake. Just my .02.

what is really strange is that i am a country boy but i've never ridden a horse. i just felt that it would be cruel to make a horse carry my big *** around. maybe a shire, percheron, or a clydesdale could. minehunter, wouldn't it be better to mount and dismount the quad from the left so you pivot on your left foot instead of the right.\

I think thats what he meant to say... unless they mount and dismount horses a little different up in Idaho!!! hehehe If you get off the horse on the right side then you had better be prepared for a quick landing!!!! Yes, I did mean the left. I have a problem with rights and lefts. I spent 20 years in the navy and If it were port and starboard, I wouldn't have the difficulty remembering.

minehunter,
i always have a hard time remembering what port and starboard are, but i think i have figured out a way to make it easier to remember. starboard uses the letter r twice so it is right and port is left. also since p comes before s in the alphabet, p is on the left and s is on the right.

since you were in the navy what do the designations mean besides left and right.

Well back in the time of the Carthagenians, who were known as great sailors. Their ships had steering boards and they were mounted on the right side of the ship. Back then they didn't have piers, they had wharfs. So you would dock the ship with the steering board to the out side away from the port, hence the terms port side and steeringboard side. Later shortened to starboard. If you are in 2 section duty, they refer to the two sections. Usually 12 hours on and 12 off. If you are in a foreign port they could also be 24 hrs. on and off. Ohter than that, I don't know.

The way I remember port and starboard equals left and right is that port and left each have 4 letters.
