Does anyone have apint problems and rust froming on the welds of their machines? Mine is a 1999 500cc 4 x4 , with all welds rusting.

 

I didn't notice anything major from looking. I took a flashlight to it, but couldn't tell if the tiny spots were mud or rust. If they were rust, it wasn't anything big. There is rust on the reverse lever, but that was there when I bought it in October. Is yours just rusted big time or is it just small accumulations on the welds? What I'm getting at is are you worried about the rust leading to a future problem. I don't know that much about the subject and I'd like to know if there is reason for me to worry.

Andy, The rust on my machine is the result of the paint actually flaking off of the weld areas. These areas include most all of the welds on the frame, racks, and footpegs. The rear rack even has the paint flaking from the spot welds under the "Arctic Cat " name, and have nearly reached the lettering in the logo. My machine when delivered had rust on the reverse lever and the area where the handlebars mount. At that time I never thought to inspect each weld for imperfections in the finish. But over the course of a few months it blossomed. Good luck, hope yours is better than mine, Russ

 

Doesn't sound too good Buff. If its getting under the Arctic Cat logo, thats pretty bad. Mine is a sticker, and I'd hate for rust to form underneath it. I have seen a couple of spots, but only the size of a pencil lead that has been broken off flush. I think you have a legitimate complaint here. I would go at the dealer or manufacturer if I were in your position as well. I hope you get it resolved ok.

hmmmm...i figured if you scratched the paint off...ride it in mud/water...it will probably rust. I dont think its just an AC thing.

 

AC454, maybe you didnt understand, but we arent talking about chips, scratches, or operationally caused paint flaking. What we are talking about is being able to take your fingernail wherever you see a weld and flicking a chunk of paint and rust away. Show me how rocks, sticks, mud, and anything else singles out the weld areas, especially those up underneath at the rear of the engine and within the skid pan and near the battery box area of the frame......

 

I bet they painted it in the wrong conditions or something. I know that there are certain temperatures that you shouldn't paint stuff in. I don't know much about it really, but I don't think you could have done anything to a year old machine to make it do that. Like I said, you have a legit arguement for the manufacturer. They should have to do something about it to be honest. I can understand normal wear and tear, but that doesn't seem to apply here. Its just a crappy paint job. I hope you get it repainted without having to pay anything.

I checked out my old '97 454 and didn't really see any evidence of the type of problem that Buff is having. The treatment he received is not surprising since he is one sole consumer and Arctic Cat is a large company with its foot clearly in the door on the snowmobile market and gaining recognition in the atv market.
I don't have much faith in large corporations, whether it's Arctic Cat, Polaris, or Yamaha. If I were you, Buff, I would write Arctic Cat a letter and inform them that, thanks to the internet and web sites like this one, your voice can and will make a difference and will hurt their bottom line.
