Idle problem on my new cat
#1
Ok, I finally got out this weekend and did some riding on the farm trails by my house, and after I ran it for 15 min, I stopped to talk with someone. Well, the engine idled ok at first, but a few seconds later, it started to rev up and up and up. I had to turn it off to prevent it from reaching too high of RPM's. I though it was a fluke thing, (since it was cold out), so I drove it some more, and it did it to me again!!
I think it needs a tune-up or something. Maybe it's something that I'm not checking?
Any advice would be great.
Thanks

Powercat,
My 2002 400i 4x4 occasionally does this also. I find out that putting it in gear, then back to neutral does the trick. I haven't contacted a dealer yet as I was hoping someone else would have the same problem and cure.

This is a guess, but what you are describing sounds similar to mine when it was new. The engine would rev high, especially when temp. was very cold. Try adjusting the idle down. That solved my problem.
My father-in-law has a new 375. He was complaining about the transmission engaging rough. The transmission would "clunk" into gear, turns out the idle was set way too high from the dealer. Adjusting the idle down solved his problem.
Another trick instead of clunking it into gear to get it to rev down, apply the choke. Good luck

Tcat,
It is not that the idle is set too high for 90% of the time...it is just occasionally that it does this high rev thing. I was out on Sunday for 3 hours, and it did it only once. Next time, I am going to remember when it happens and the position of handle bars etc. Perhaps there is some sort of strain on the throttle cable at certain times.

I posted earlier about this on my 2002 500i 3 weeks old. Sitting on trailer warming up for ten minutes, with choke off, then started to rev up unexpectedly. When warm it continually stalls, with idle adjusted prooperly, when you put it in gear. Haven't been back to dealer yet.

Sounds like it could be a vacum leak. Try checking for a loose intake boot, I had mine come all the way off when it backfired. I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start, so I was going to check to see if it was getting fuel and the carb was off of the intake boot. It sliped right back on, didn't even have to loosen the clamp. This is just a shot in the dark, but it does seem like a vacum leak. You can spray some wd40 around the intake and carb to see if it changes the idle speed. Also try draining the fuel bowl, there is a drain on the bottom of the carb.
