Question on No Locking Dif.

Odin~
Craps O'mighty. You had some work put into your HO. Seeing your list of mods, I could imagine the "HO Train" would have been something to watch.
I really like the 500I, AC really did it right on that quad, with the exception of no front locker. While I have seen AC's 3 wheel, it sure doesn't seem to happen as easily as it does on other unlocked 4X4's. I keep hearing rumors, that it will happen, it I would suspect it will. With other manufactures having a locked front end, I think all the flag ship 4X4's will have that feature eventually. I would have bought a 500I if it was out when my quadless situation got the best of me.
That 600 Grizz w/Nitrous. I can't even imagine what a quad would do under the influence of that.
Keep me posted on which quad you end up with, and just out of curiousity, why did you sell your incredibly modded HO?

You know damn well I'm not a newbie Odin. I can't agree with your Yamaha comments until I witness some problems with mine firsthand, but that has not happened so far. Yes it has its downfalls, but from my experience they are miniscule and nitpicky. Mainly weak plastic in place of aluminum, and mainly on the underbelly. I've seen no ill-effects in water. Never saw any boiling gas bullcrap. Haven't experienced any tippiness thus far, though adding wide tires does stabilize what is basically a narrow quad in stock form.
Yamaha's regular limited slip leaves something to be desired, but the bike does come with the locker which gives all options for the drivetrain. 2wd for messing around, easy steering 4wd for moderately tough spots, and locked 4wd for maximum traction in all circumstances including downhills.
Compared to a 500 HO, I don't see any comparison. Compared to a 700, I would put them on par with each other. I won't sit here and say a 660 is better than a 700, there is no basis for that. They both do the same thing about equal. I rode what was supposedly the first 700 made. In fact, a sales rep brought it by my house in late August to show it to me. He had seen me on the forums and was going to be in the area, so I guess he just looked me up in the phone book. I rode it that day, and I was impressed. Not so much that I would go trade, but I could see that both quads were right with each other in about evey category. From my viewpoint, the only knockoff from one to the other was weight. The 700 felt like it held the road a little better going fast over bumps and the 660 felt more manuverable.
I don't understand your deal with Yamaha though. Did you not own an AC at one brief time? Why did you get rid of it? Was it the body roll or what. I don't quite remember, but I must ask why you would get rid of an HO for an AC 500i??? You will lose power and traction both.
Some of these "newbies" around here have some sense you know. Remember, we were all newbies at one time or another.

For the matter, Gordon Banks was great in helping me out. Of course that was summer of 98 in the extremely old forum format. No, there won't be another Gordon. I could care less if there is another Twig Farmer though. The man made some good points, but came off to me as if he posted for the sole reason that folks would view him as an essayist on quads, as well as the supreme source of all knowledge. I thought he poked his nose in too much myself. I don't even know who that other Floodrunner guy is. Cob is as good as it gets though, and no there will never be another Chickenman. There will be others though. Folks come and go in the forums, and it does gain good members with something decent to say.
I've had some decent insight over the years myself, and gained a small reputation for honesty and calling it like I see it. That in mind, I've also been in numerous bash sessions and arguements, and I regret none of it. Thats what the forums are for. You take the good with the bad, and I've seen no good from you post about Yamaha at the top of the page. You were just trying to **** people off with that, and there is no denying it. If this post makes me sound like an ***, then so be it. I've been one before.

The Artic-Cat 3 wheel drive is only accurate when one front wheel is off the ground. I have seen many cats in deep mud with all 4 tires pulling. Even when the cats are hooked to the weight sled on dry ground all 4 tires pull (don't power shift in low range while pulling a weight sled can you say grenade ).
I am on the fence right now. The downside of the cat is I will always be last back to the camp ground. Since the cat only does 50mph the HO would do 61mph. The new big bores are even faster and there are three 700 twins in our club now along with a 650 twin. I still have 60 days to decide before our first big run of the year.
Andy you are not a newbie.

Correct on the 3 wheel drive thing. All limited slips will get full traction if all 4 tires are on the ground. They will all free wheel with one in the air too as long as their rears are spinning out and the bike isn't moving forward.
