Question for AC owners?
#11
Minehunter I do agree about AC trying to make more of their own parts. I wonder if AC could be working on their own motor? Do they make their own sled motors? If they do I would think that they would want to have their own ATV motor.
Chunky keep them coming just like they are. I understand just fine. I'm sure I am hard to understand at times too. I never thought that someone could write with the southern drawl, you do it great.

Chunky if you go to this web site you see the parts breakdown for all the AC's. It shows the both the 400 and 500 using the same parts throughout both differentials.

I had a cousin though my ex who works at the AC plant as an engineer and it he who told me that the diff were the same. Who am I to argue with him. He has always given me the straight scoop.
PS Shur-Trac by Honda is the same as the old one just packaged under a new name.

My 98 500 and 01 500a front difs worked great. They both worked equally well, I could tell no difference between the two. The 98 was of course full time, the 500a was switchable from 2wd to 4wd. They were both better than the 02 dif.

hEY DUDE , MUDCAT mine too , minehunter I dont question what you said one minute , but just check out what i said about the past models or next time your at your dealer see if he has a 2001 brocure it realy dose say that the 400 has ture 4 wheeel drive , I have a 2000 sevice manual , says same as you sad , but it shows a diff with select 2&4 the 400 dont have this , and dont look the same, I may be wrong , but look and see , anyway it was better then my o2 VA CHUNKY BOY

I had a 99 model and my cousin has a 98 454. I don't know if the differentials were better on those than the present models, but they will sure enough show you the 3 wheel motion if you put them in the right spot. It seemed like once there was some great speculation that the 2001 automatic had this great new differential that always gave traction, but it seems that has been put to rest.
I like that comment about the sur-trac. Talk about a lot of people believing the hype. That thing dissapointed, and it would have been just fine if they hadn't taunted it to be some kind of actual progressively locking differential.

Ok, here is alittle Arctic Cat history lesson.
The Arctic Cat full time 4wd models (excludeing the 250s) all used the same differential. From the 1996 454 to the 2001 400. They were all the same. Some of the part numbers might have "superceeded," but the overall differential was the same.
In 2000, the 500a (500 Automatic transmission model) recived a newly designed front differential that had a 2wd option. In 2001, both of the 500 models were equipted with this 2wd slectable front differential.
And finialy in 2002 Arctic Cat designed there own front differential that is in ALL of there 4wd models for 2002, and alot of it's parts are shared with the rear differential in the i models.
