The manual for my '02 500i Auto says a complete stop is necessary to shift in/out of 4WD...This seems like a pain to do all the time...Does anyone out there perform 'rolling' 4WD shifts with their AC's? I did try it the other day, shifting out of 4WD at a VERY slow roll, no problems..I feel that as long as the wheels are not spinning, or I am just rolling along gently, activating or de-activating the front diff wont hurt anything...Is this wrong? Again, thanks in advance...:-)

delta,

I do the rolling switch all the time, but only the way you describe - slow speed, little or no throttle, no wheel spin. Switching out of 4wd is often easier using the rolling technique than when at a stop. Sometimes the differential "binds" up when you're stopped, and rolling ahead 10 feet or so will free it up. I don't see how it will hurt anything.

I put my cat in and out of 4-wheel all the time, Although i never push it in when excellerating and i find that it comes out of 4-wheel alot easier when your just coasting rather than when at a complete stop.

I believe Arctic Cat's reasoning behind stating that you should stop your ATV for shifting the 2wd/4wd lever has more to do with removing your hands from the bars than anything else. If they would not state this they would be setting themselfs up for many stupid lawsuits from idiots trying to shift in and out of 4wd while ridding near the edge of a mountain or something of that matter.
