Hello all. I have a 98 500 4x4. I havent driven it since i noticed the transfer case gasket was gone and it was leaking some oil. This was 2 weeks ago. I had to move it out of the garage last night to get at something else, it worked fine so i didnt think anything of it. But a few hours later when i put it back in, it was front wheel drive only??? But in reverse its 4x4. What might cause this? The oil was a little low (down to the bottom marker) It didnt do this last time i rode it. Any suggestions? Comments?

Thanks

Mark

This gasket has gone out twice on me!! (98 500 4x4 also) It went and i fixed it with a new gasket, then the same thing happened. Does any1 know if there is a new gasket im supposed to use? maybe a thicker one? my dealer is new and dont know squat. My quad has never gone into 2x4 tho.. but this is an annoying bit times 3.

My gasket just came in today, i ordered part # 3402-538 Sorry to hear about yours going 3 times??? thats crazy. Even with the high revving i put 800 miles on this quad with no problem. I would expect longer life out of a gasket. Did you tourqe the bolts correctly? Im sure you did, just throwing ideas out...

I was looking at my quad again last night, i was wrong. There is no 4x4 in either forward or reverse. In looking closer at the service manual i cant see it being the transmission (but im not a mechanic) The drive shaft has one gear connecting to the main drive gear i think. But any way ill tear it apart this weekend (transfer case) and see if it makes any sense. Ill post monday with any results for those who may be interested.

Vewdew lives in Canada so $4200 canadian is about $5 US. LOL I'm off mon and tues if you need a had with the cat Mark. I'll stand around and drink beer while you do all the work. So when are you going to take me over to check out the new cats anyways????? I assume it's Martin you're dealing with, he was pretty good to deal with when he worked for the Jeep dealership. I was worried about using the jeep hard when I first bought it and he told me to go beat the crap out of it and not to worry about voiding the warrenty. Are you going to get the extended warrenty with the new cat? Did you get Jen's permission yet??? LOL Make sure you get Martin to toss in a seat for Jen!!!

Keno, no it only has 1400 miles on it. I only bought it from them 4 months ago. Which is why he is helping me out.

Sambo, bite me **** Ill give you a call later in the day today to see what you are doing.

Not the tranny, not even close lol. (good mechanic, lol) Its the drive shaft. There is a bearing and a seal gone. The seal went and it was only a matter of time before the bearing went. I pulled the **** end of it yesterday and bearings went everywhere lol. Only reason im laughing is because its 35 for a bearing and 15 for a seal.

Schematic

Parts 21 and and 29 are needed to fix it.
