Automatic Transmission?
Can an '82 Honda ATC185S be push started? This thing has 5 gears but no clutch. I am not familiar with this set-up. It also has an extra gear for a shifter above the one that has the shifter on it. I am very confused! The pull starter is missing the "teeth" inside it that makes contact to start the engine. It pops out of gear everytime I try to push start it.

The little shaft above the shifter was for a pointer to indicate what gear you're in.Put the trike in 2or3 and push or pull the shifter halfway between gears. This disengages the clutch pack.Roll down a hill or get a push when your ready release the pressure and the clutch will engage. If your clutch pack and spragg clutch are not worn too bad the engine will turn over.good luck

That's likely the 86 model I think thats when they added that feature. It's a saftey feature wired through the neutral light circuit. If I'm not mistaken you can't kick start it either if it's not in neutral because the CDI won't recieve power till the neutral light circuit is powered. However once it is started this no longer applies.I've heard of people not being able to get their trike started back in the woods because of faulty or intermittant power in this circuit and couldn't get spark for starting because the trike thought it was not in neutral. What they did was use a jumper wire from the battery and put power in the circuit from the light or near it.Apparently it allowed the ignition system to work properly for the start because the power could flow to the CDI.Speaking of neutral I said the little shaft was for gear indication but I think it only showed neutral not all gears.
