I just picked up a 1983 250R this past weekend for $400 and it's great. My other trike is a 1981 200, so you can imagine my surprise with the newfound power! Since I have some cash leftover, I want to get some more power. What are some types of motor work I can do so I don't get my a$$ handed to me by Banshees and Raptors? Not trying to be king of the dunes, I just don't want to get smoked. Also, my sis has a 02 400ex. Do I stand a chance in a race? Thanks

You are going to need alot more than a pipe to not get smoked by raptors and banshees. My 85250r beats my bros 02 400 pretty easily but I prolly have twice the hp of your stock air cooled 250. You could probably find a beat up liquid cooled cr250 cheaper than building the aircooled motor.

I can spend an immediate $500. The suspension is in great shape, so i'm hoping to spend my cash on motor work. I heard Honda makes or made a 300 kit for it. Is this kit an awesome upgrade? Anyhow, any good suggestions will be appreciated. It already has an FMF pipe, new carb, and aftermarket swingarm. Thanx

assuming by what you wrote, you want more top end drag racing in desert conditions? if so: take care of your air flow where you want it.
what kind of fmf pipe do you currently have? usually fmf favors bottom and midrange stuff and not top end. But anyways, I'd start with a UNI filter and reeds that favor where you want your power the most. Delta VForce are great for high end. (also check out the yamaha forum 'the truth about reeds and reed cages' about G3 Power Curve Reeds. The air filter and reeds will give you tons more power than you have already.

You can also get a port job job that favors where you want power, low, mid top end.......usually you can get a port job done for less than $160....
The next biggest thing for power is compression, this is what really matters. I hope someone can help me here but I( don't know how compression effects your top end..if it takes top end or gives more and how that works with top end porting. Can anyone help?

I'm not sure what type of FMF pipe I have, it was already on the bike when I got it. It has a K&N filter also. Will reeds make the bike run better? I've heard they don't add much HP but you get better throttle response. Are they hard to install? A big question I have is am I going to need to rejet it? Are there any aftermarket reeds that don't require you to rejet? Going to the dunes at Pismo in Cali in a few months, so I want her to be ready. Thanx for the feedback

i think some reeds you will need to rejet just to keep up with the improved flow. reeds are easy to install. when your looking at the left side of the bike, the boot goes from the airbox to the carb to the intake manifold(where the reeds are) so you would simply take the boot off and pull the reeds out and install the new ones. reeds add a lot more than just throttle response and depending on what reeds you get, you will get the HP. different reeds focus on different(angles, etc) power bands. some deliver on low and some mid some high...some maybe even all around. This weekend I am installed G3 Power Curve Reeds on my trx, I will let you know how good they are as best I can after the weekend.
