185S sprocket conversion

I have an '83 185S with a bent axle and good sprocket and a '82 185S with a good axle and uses the older rubber damper type sprocket application. I thought is was going to be easy to press the hub off of the '83 and onto the '82 axle but find that the machine shop says it they can't pressed it off. They mushroomed the bad axle threads trying. My only other option would be to put the '82 axle in with the rubber dampers but the sprocket is bad and so are the dampers. What do I do?
Can the '83 spocket hub be pressed off, maybe it is tapered and was being pressed the wrong direction? Are the rubber dampers and sprocket still available? (I've seen the sprocket on eBay) Is a sprocket made that will bolt directly to the damper type sprocket hub even though the diameters are different between the 2 years?
Thanks, Bob. bobpotts@nctimes.net
