Nick,
Like everything else, you get what you pay for. The biggest differences being that most cheap helmets are made of fiberglass still. The good ones use composite plastic. You shouldn't have a hard time finding a CP helmet under $100. I know that M2R and Fulmer make the best of those under $100
I personally own two helmets......a Fulmer AF-R, which is CP and only costs $85....and a HJC CLX-4 which is CP and costs just over $120
Just like most quads, helmet makers hange the graphics from year to year. You should find a left over '03 model on ebay or your local dealer prety reasonable.

I agree with knowsalot, you get what you pay for........I bought mine new for $75 and it is a M2R that is CP, DOT approved, And Snell M2000 cert.! The down fall with it being cheap is the ventilation is pretty poor! It is very comfortable for me. If you get a helmet that is SNELL or DOT and someday you break it and walk away, you will be happy you spent the extra cash; so will we!
