Default Electric Starter Problems

Ok heres the story,

Went out on the weekend drove the bike all day, stopped for breaks the bike started up no problem.

Got home took the bike off the trailer bike started no problem. 2 days later took the bike out to wash it off and bike wouldn't start.

I checked all the wires and they seem fine. After looking at a wiring diagram there is a relay that may be bad. Could it be possible that the relay is bad or could it be the brushes in the starter.

Note: The starter is making no noise whatsoever, not even the low battery click.

Does it run with the pull start? Lights work? Does the relay click at all? Maybe you could jump the relay. Sounds like its time to get out the ol' multimeter (12 v test light will work ok too). I wash my 200m weekly, and I've had no starting probs yet.

It will start with the pull start, the lights work, the relay doesn't click at all.

There is no noise whatsoever.

Ok then, if the relay doesnt click, you are not getting either the signal voltage to the relay coil or the ground from the relay coil. The relay works like this... has a small coil inside that is grounded, on the other side of the coil is trigger voltage sent from whatever is hooked to it (i.e. starter button). When the voltage goes in it, and out thru ground, it becomes a small electromagnet. Thus pulling the contactor, which is attached to the coil, to a 12v wire, and sends it to the load (i.e. starter motor). Still with me? Thats why I said jump the relay plug, bypassing the coil, and sending 12 v to starter. If starter works, then you have a voltage prob to relay, or a bad relay. Hope this helps.

Hey

Thanks for all the help fellas......... the starter solenoid was stuck. I had to remove the solenoid which is located behind the battery box, removed the connections and removed the cover for the solenoid, cleaned up the spring and all connections and everything worked fine.
