Default 200x carb problem

I have 84 200x, does not idle correct and smokes (rich) when you gun it. I have cleaned the carb and tried various settings on the mixture screw but does not seem to make a difference. I was thinking the float was too high but it is a plastic unit and don't see how you can change the height. Any ideas are appreciated

Sounds like idle mixture screw.

Is plug wet?

Does it smoke all the time or only when you gun it?

Blue, black, white smoke.

Sounds like top end rebuild time, head re-valve, something like that.

Sorry I can't be more help.

Do a compression check to see if its oil blowby.

Mixture screw has little or no effect,
Black smoke, like rich can almost smell fuel.
Doesn't smoke all the time.

rebuild the carb

surprisingly easy, just make note of how many turns are on each adjuster so you can reset them when you are done.

needle clip might be set too high, try dropping it one slot/position.

Mixture screw should be about 2 turns out I believe, and try what bigblock said and move your needle down one notch. Let us know what happens.

Take the carb apart and blow air through the jets and all passages!

1984 specs(for a stock engine!)

Pilot screw out 2-1/4 turns
Main Jet-108
Needle clip 4th groove from the top
Float level 14mm
I can't recall what the pilot Jet should be.....35 or 38???
