painting plastic on honda 200m 1984
#1
Hi everyone,
Similar to one of the recent posters, I am also painting my atc. I did the frame and need to do the gas tank. I was also trying to decide whether to paint the plastic or not but havent decided yet because I know plastic can be hard to paint and looks like crap after when it's all scratched up. I posted a while ago asking for advice on the type of paint. Someone mentioned a paint called Plastic Fusion which is supposed to be scratcch proof. I bought a can recently and tried it on the back of the fender to test it. I only put 3 coats at most but it still can be scratched off. It says it takes 7 days for it to be scratch proof (it's only been 4 so far). Would one or two clearcoat layers help any? Has anybody successfully painted their plastic? It's not a big deal but I tired of seeing the same old red, I've ben riding these for 25 years almost and figured it would be nice to see a different color. Thank you for any advice and/or help anyone can provide.

when i got my three wheeler it was painted black and the paint was just coming off so if you scratched all the old paint off so its rough then paint it it might stick im not sure but thats what i heard from a friend

Plastic Fusion, don't bother.Painted mine two years ago(over Honda red)
Lots has flaked off etc.
I sanded lots before painting but just doesn't stick very well.
It's a bush bike so I am not too concerned, but if you ride in public,I would think twice.

I put white plastics on mine and the red headlight did not cut it. so after a lot of trial and error I finally used 80 grit and soaked it in laquer thinner and wet sanded the plastic. once the thinner dryed (the plastic was a little soft still) I painted it with plastic fusion and four months later it still looks good
