Default 1982 Honda 185S Ignition Problems

I had weak spark and was getting the black soot fouled plug problem, so I checked the ohms on the stator ignition windings and it was reading about half what the Clymer manual said it should. So I bought a new stator coil and primary coil and installed both. I put it all back together and she fired right up and ran for a couple minutes and then wouldn't restart. I pulled the plug and checked the spark again and hardly any spark. I must have a bad wire somewhere or something, but not sure where to look. Also, can I bypass the kill switch on the handlebar by unplugging the black wire at the harness? I thought maybe the switch could be shaky, but it does switch from off to run ok and everything. Is it possible the CDI black box is shot? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I have got a couple gray hairs over this now!

Thanks in advance,

Rob

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!!! I have the same problem as you on my 200s. ive tryed everything i put a different cdi box on and coil and sparkplug wire but it still is weak. it wouldnt be the switch but it could be connections somewhere like the stator connection or the cdi, or even the coil isnt getting a good ground. clean the ground wire on the coil its the screw holding the coil on closest to the front.
hope this helps

Hey thanks for the help Melvin. I took your advice and cleaned the ground connection at the coil. I also found a bad section of wire that had apparently been pinched coming out of the kill switch (a black wire). I also unplugged the connector from the CDI black box and cleaned that up really good. I then noticed the bullet connector on the red/black ignition wire coming out of the stator was a little loose so I crimped it down a little and got it to snap in a lot better. Not exactly sure which one of these things I found was the culprit, but glad to say I tugged the rope and she fired right up! Made a couple carb adjustments and ran a 1/2 tank of fresh gas thru it and did not foul the plug as of yet.

Thanks again for the help!

Rob
