Default 250SX cam chain adjustment...how do you?

Can't figure out the trick to adjusting the cam chain on the SX. I have a manual and it doesn't describe the process in it at all. Any help?

Make sure your engine is cold and not running. To adjust your cam chain you must remove the adjustment bolt numbered 1 in the pic below. To find this pic open the url. This is just a pic of the adjuster on your bike. You do not need to remove the whole thing, just the middle adjustment bolt. Use a small tipped flathead screwdriver and install into the small hole where the bolt was removed from. Turn it which ever way that starts to feel like a spring is winding up. Wind this adjuster till it its wound as far as it can, then with one quick motion pop out the screwdriver releaseing the tensioner quickly to its needed position. Then replace the bolt you removed and torque to 8 foot pounds.

Thanks for the info Honda Mechanic. I've never replaced the cam chain on on of these before..but I have done it on a 185S. Is it any more difficult than that?

I know this is quite an old forum, but yes, it is much more difficult. You have to crack open the right crank case cover and remove the centrifugal clutch, manual clutch, oil pump, oil pipe, separator plate, and clutch lifter assembly in order to put new cam chain on the correct gear.

I wasn’t the one that mentioned it, but the person who did was spot on. This is the center bolt you are looking for. The cam chain adjustment is quite easy and only takes a second.
