Default Help timing cam/valve on a 82 atc 70 please!!

Trying to time cam and valves after a new piston and rings. Bought a haynes book but still have a few questions.
How do you find TDc without the head on and without pulling the flywheel? Or how do I know if I'm TDC on comp stroke or exhaust stroke with out the head on???

Do I need to loosen the can chain in order to reinstall? How??

Lastly the book says to put sprocket in the chain, put "O" mark up at 12 oclock, lower head on cylinder and turn "0" mark to notch at 3 oclock and the install the 3 bolts, Is this correct. Thanks guys.

My question is it says to lay the cam sprocket into the chain so "0" id up or 12 oclock. The notch in the head for the sprocket is at 9 oclock. Don't understand why thet don't tell you to line up the "o" with the notch in the head at 9 oclock? Why do you start with it up or at 12 o clock if you have to turn it anyway. thanks
