Hey everybody. I have been mixing my 86 atc 250r gas at 36:1 ratio. I use 110 race gas and amsoil interceptor full synthetic oil. I know honda says 20:1 but thats way too rich for todays good oils I think. I was thinking about leaning my ratio, Wondering if it will run better and cleaner. Please tell me what you guys think I should run ratio wise or if you have any horror stories about running too lean on the oil. Thanks.

Correct me if I am wrong? But isn't it better to be smokey than to have no smoke and ruin your engine??? Seriously I am new to the whole mixing thing. I have a 1983 250r and in the clymer manual it says 20:1 but I was told to do that since I just had my engine overhauled(new tranny gears, connecting rod, piston).

"the clymer manual it says 20:1 but I was told to do that since I just had my engine overhauled(new tranny gears, connecting rod, piston)." I understand what your saying about running it smoky and not ruining your engine but 20:1 is soooo rich. However for breaking in a new motor that is good. Besides the plug fowling the amount of sludge like buildup that will accumulate on the inside of the silencer and around any pipe seals if they are bad is drastically increased. I mean it would seem to make sense the richer the better but I believe 20:1 is overkill, BUT I would feel insecure about running @ 50:1 like it suggests on the bottles of many good oils like my interceptor amsoil, I woudnt go that lean. I believe that honda and others suggested such ratios in the past for some of these reasons: Oils on the market were not as "good" as whats available today, Knowledge about ratios and outcomes, Probably to cover themselves for any engine damage liability from improper mixing? also I dont know if air cooled suggest more oil because of higher temps or not and they kept that ratio because it worked? Heck Some really old two cycle motors ive seen say to mix sae 30 at really rich rates. I wonder what some of todays injected oils equal for a ratio? Or maybe ratios have been drilled down for pollution reasons??

ya i whould never run 50:1 eather.... thats just crazy.....like the one season i ran my lt250 40:1 with yamalube. ran fast but only lasted 3/4 of a season then needed a new top end. with 32:1 never had to rebuild it at all for the 3 years after that and then i sold it so dont know how long it lasted.

The hp was my other choice but I went with the interceptor, I figured because of its extra detergents and being designed for power valves it would keep my eng in better cleaner condition. Maybe im still thinking old fashioned cause 50:1 scares me, They really back you up if you have a problem ? What if your engine wears quickly and they claim you mixed it even leaner or something? I have more research to do theres so many oils and options, But thanks for the info.
