I have a 1983 Honda 185s. You cannot see the drive chain as it has a cover around it. What I was wondering is the correct way to oil the chain. On the top of the chain cover/housing located at the rear axle is a rubber plug that looks to be removable. Do you just pour some chain oil in there? If so, how much? Will it leak out & cause a mess? Or are you supposed to remove the chain cover and oil it that way? Any ideas? Thanks!

 

The way I do it is get some spray chain lube take the plug out and have someone push it while you are spraying into the hole, push it far enough to know that you got a few layers on it and you should be set.

 

iv done this cept on my own. i got some chain oil from dennis kirk. seemed to do pretty good when i had the wheeler. it was no fling off lube. but i sold it back in 2002. these are 2 plugs on the chain housing. there one on the back top and there was one on the side think it was just visable in front of the tire. i kinda miss it. it was like a rock.

 

there's a small plug on the top of the cover at the back. This is the hole to oil the chain. The other, bigger hole ahead of the front tire is to check chain tension when you're adjusting the chain. Put a block under the back axle, start the bike, put it in 1st gear, and spray or pour the oil through the small hole in the top. look through the inspection hole to see when its well coated, put the plugs back in, and you're good to go!

 

My nephew has a chain driven quad, the no fling spray lube works great its all I'll use on it. (quick and easy)
