honda big red 250 alternator issue
#1
Can any one tell me how to check the alternator and cdi. The bike starts and runs fine with the kickstart and battery, but doesn't charge. and the lights only work when the battery is in, and some time when there is no battery the nuetral light occasionally works?

Here is the alternator tests , you just test between the 3 yellow wires , then check each to ground .. Your reg/rec tests probably won't test right with this test without a Sanwa SP10D or SP15D meter ..

mine runs great with NO battery at all. I just put one in today and it reads 12 volts off, 14 at idle and a little less when slightly revved. I wonder if it's easy to check your regulator? if it runs, the cdi is OK, DONT question it! sometimes that battery will act AS a regulator tempering the charging circuit. so it runs without the battery?? that means you have enough alt output to run the engine. occasional neutrallight with NO nattery? sounds like it might be searching for a ground. clean them ALL up and it might work. free and easy test the regulator \free and easy voltmeters are 2.99 at harbor freight and prob walmart too lights only work with the battery in? They should work withOUT a battery within 10 feet of the machine. Maybe the battery IN just dplicates a ground that isn't completely happy. If I didnt love/NEED these things I'd get a few golf carts and sleep at night. keep me posted
