I know not of what I speak so here goes.

On the 85 to 87 250 Big Reds were they all equipped with two speed gearboxes? I mean a high and low range. In other words the possibility of 10 total speeds. Five speeds in each high and low range.

Still lookin for a real good Big Red reasonably close by but no luck. :-{

I think that was just the earlier models. My dad had an '87 and it was a regular 5speed afaik.

The 85-87 big reds are 250's. The 250's didnt come with a high and low I wish they did.

on 85-86 big red 250's they are straight 5 speed
on 84 big red 200's these have high and low selectable
the 95-86 250sx (almost like the big red) is a normal 5 speed also

1991 250x w/ 350x motor and Xtras
1986 ATC200X, 6 speed all stock
1985 ATC250R, 6 speed, straight up nasty
1985 250 Big Red - apart at the moment
1984 200 Big Red - still goin

prob more still in the back of the garage..
ride hard, ride red, later

don't worry you won't miss the dual range!

the single range tranny in these bikes are well built......and because the 3 wheeler is quiet light she will respone well when shifting under load anyway

my 250sx is like that......because its not 4x4 and only has 3 wheels it is light, and it doesn't have the drive line drag of a 4x4......therefore she feels more 'peepy'.....and will accelerate through the gears with ease......the bigred should be very similar

the single range gearbox honda built and offered on its atv's/atc's were a big selling point to me
