My 85 250sx stalls when given more than 1/2 throttle. Can someone with experience tell me how difficult it is to take the carb apart? Mine needs to be cleaned out but the diagram in the manual shows a lot of small parts and I'm not sure if I want to get into it. The lower part looked easy so I removed the bowl and cleaned what I could. The air filter's clean as is the fuel line to the carburator. I guess after 17 years it deserves a cleaning.

 

There's one more thing to check into.

Look into the ducting and the frame where the air boot connects to the airbox. [Not the airbox to carb ducting].

Dirt Dobbers are bad about building in there causing the problem you describe...especially on the 250SX and 250ES BigRed.

Other than that, you are on the right track.

 

Ooooooh, I know the thing you're talking about. I will look into it. I would prefer cleaning the air passage to taking the carburator apart. I don't ride it hard but it's always possible that something got in there and is partially blocking the airway. Thanks.

 

You can get a carb rebuid kit from Dennis Kirk, or others I'm sure. I recently serviced the carb on my '85 which I've had since new. It is not really very difficult to do and it did make my machine run better. Make sure you clean all the passages in the carb when you have it apart. Have a couple cans of carb cleaner on hand when you tear it apart. Make sure you determine the air jet location prior to taking it apart. I'm pretty sure the manaul tells you about this. The hardest part of this job is actually removing the carb, you have to take the machine apart a little to do it, nothing major. Just make sure to put the frame to airbox boot back on before the tank [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]
