Hey guys, i thought maybe someone on here cud point
me in the right direction. I got this little trike for a easy
40 bucks, it is all there. Looks like the guy had rebuilt it
and ran it for a little while, but im pretty sure he had
buried it cuz of all the sand everywhere and in everything.
Question, how do i get the brake drum off? im trying to
clean it up, and get new brakes tis full of rust, dirt etc.
I mean i am just stumped, i have taken the whole trike
apart to clean and restore. I cannot get to the brakes
in the rear end. It has the sprocket holder on the 1 side
and the brake drum housing on the other. Does it screw
off or does it bang off. Do i need a puller? Does anyone
know? I can see down into the drum and man what a
crustcake. The sprocket mount looks like it was machine
pressed on. I have wd40ed to the extreme. I got the
brakes to put on but just cant get in to it. Any input
wud be greatly received.

You just take the axle nuts off (the big ones on the right) then take off the brake cover. I couldn't be easier.

Thanks TRX Rob for your response. It is not the cover i
am talking about . The actual brake drum itself wont
come off. It has been sitting for some time.
I mean, the drum has to come off right. How else can
i get the pads and stuff in there. Does it unscrew like
the axle nuts, or does it just pull off? More help
wud be greatly appreciated.

It just slides off the axle. But here are somethings to look at:
1. If the brake drum and axles spines look corroded, use liquid wrench and let it sit a bit, or use a touch to heat it up.
2. Make sure you loosen the brake adjuster, sometimes the brake shoes wear a slot into the brake drum, and even though the brakes don't work, they will prevent you from removing the drum.
3. Most important, Look very closely as the spines on the end of the brake drum, there is a rubber o-ring that you need to remove that goes at the end of the brake drum to keep water from entering the bearings from the axle spines. Sometimes (it happened to me) when you pull on the brake drum without removing it, it will roll up and get caught between the brake drum and alxe, making the removal of the brake drum near impossible.

I suspect TRX's #3 is what's causing you grief - I just did this last weekend, and had a heck
of a time getting mine off - because of that o-ring.

I had to keep pulling, pushing back in, pulling hard, pushing back in until I got it out about an inch -
then, when I pushed it back in, the o-ring stayed out on the axle far enough for me to get a fingernail
on it and walk it on out of the way . . .
