I hate roads as well, prefer woods trails more than anything. That is the good thing about hatfield /mcoy mostly woods very little roads until you get into town. Much taller mtns than anything in Mich but...much further away! Going to order a bigger screen gps, thet little nuvi 40 can be hard to see, will have a 6" screen on the way shortly. Now just need to find a mountable compass to keep track of direction or figure out how to mount my military compass. Just browsing others suggestions for orv trails in Mich.
Little O is an ATV Trail. Only 50" width or less allowed. Big O is a Motorcycle Trail. No UTVs or ATVs allowed. Tin Cup Spring has both a Motorcycle Trail and an ORV Route that mostly run next to each other if the map is right. You can ride anything you want to on the Route but it's only 17 miles long. What are you going to do for the rest of the day the hour?
Just east of Little O Trail is Little Manistee Motorcycle Trail and Route. It looks like the Route and Motorcycle Trail overlap most of the way. The Route is 43 miles long and connects to Lincoln Hills Motorcycle Trail and Route. The Route is 22 miles long. Both Routes form loops and if you rode both would only have to backtrack about 2 miles between them. The rest would be new trails all the way would and make a good day's ride. Or you could just ride Little Manistee Route if you don't want to do the whole 65 miles.
Thanks Frank, this is what I am looking for are folks that have been on these and know what to recomend. Have no problem with St Helens are just looking for all options.
I never rode on the west side of the state at all. Silver Lake State Park has the only sand dunes open to ORVs east of the Mississippi, but I don't think it would be much fun on a big heavy ute. Since most of the other trails over there are either for motorcycles or too short, I didn't think what's left would be worth the trip. If you had a dirt bike you could ride from the trails SE of Silver Lake way up north and all the way across the state to Lake Huron. There are a lot of trails and routes that are part of the MCCCT (Michigan Cross Country Cycle Trail) and some other places you need to be street legal to hop over to the next trail. If you see trail markers that say MCCCT on them, that's what it's for. I've seen people on ORV trails that didn't know what MCCCT meant when they saw the triangles. The USDA says it goes through a national forest, a state forest, and back through a national forest and it's 1,200 miles altogether. I didn't know it was anywhere near that long.
ETA: I'm not trying to sound like a teacher but now you know more than some people who live here.
Chris sent me this yesterday, when I asked him more about the west side trails. He's been going there for years, since its closer for him from his home in Indiana. I asked questions about gas stations, restaurants, trails, comparison of our n trails/w side trails, spring trail flooding, places to camp. This is what he sent.
There a couple good places for fuel. A place just north of Baldwin a little ways. A spot at wolf lake and another in Carrieville. All close to the trails. Also in Peacock a powerhouse Atv shop. Also a must for lunch or dinner right off the trail is club 37. Bar and grill. A great little spot for breakfast along the Lincoln hills trail for breakfast. Dawns country kitchen and gun shop. As for the trails. Nothing steep. But a good mix rolling hills, some flat and lots of beauty. If you want to talk scenery’s. In my opinion Baldwin is better than St Helen areas. Especially in the summer and fall months. Flooding? I’ve been there some springs and nothing others some flooding but nothing like St. Helens. Little O has two trail heads to get into it. If you run the whole system it’s close to 50 miles. You can get to the northern trail head from little manistee trails. The southern trail head by road out of Baldwin. If your gonna ride Little O plan ahead. It’ll take 4-5 hours. Tight and slow going. Buddy and me did it in 2 1/2 hours. But we were moving FAST!!! trying to beat the sunset. It gets dark as hell in there at night. Tin cup is out on its own. East of little manistee. You can get to it from carrieville by riding down kings highway south to trail head. If you ride everything you’ll turn about 250-300 miles. Justice and I can knock it out in 2 days of riding. You could do it in a day but that requires riding from 8:00 am to 12:00 at night. Did it once but pass on ever a again. Getting to old for that. We usually stay at the country store campground at the corner of hwy 37 and 16th street. Cheap and have a decent bath house. Under new ownership, Candy sold it last year and have only stayed once since new owners took over. So not sure if prices are still same and name same? I think so. I really like this place. Only 1/8 mile out the back of campground to trail head. Another place I really like and the wife loves is the best bear lodge campground. Nice place and super nice people run the place. It’s on the north end of the trails up towards Lincoln hills trails. Have about a 3-4mile ride to get to the trails from that one but not that big of a deal. I’m ready to ride.
Thanks guys, all good info. Sand dunes are boring unless you have a dune machine which I dont. Been to Silver Lake a couple times, just not worth the hassle with a heavy SxS. Much rather find some scenic trails with woods and rolling hills, see some wildlife ad cruise around the local lakes. Will just keep looking, after all still have lots that I havent seen and frankly dont even mind seeing the same thing over, at least we are out playing!
Bought the GoPro Action camera. After looking at many positive reviews and comparisons of other brands.
Ken, if you don't have a atv camera I'll get the Go Pro for your sxs, for a house/camper warming gift, by far warmer than a tent lol Its the least I can do to show my appreciation! I'll be more than glad to do it! Thanks
Taking pics and videos is not my cup of tea, I do enjoy watching other peoples videos but dont take the time to do them myself. I did just order a gps with a 6" screen, that should be easier to see than the little 3.5" screen I have now. The same cards with the vvmaps should still work in the new unit. Had a lite dusting of snow last night but nothing to get excited about. Pond is completely froze over again, so winter is not letting go just yet. March is always a big question mark with the weather!
You know, as we all grow older, one day lol, we'll want to look back at the things we once cared about doing....ONE is 4-tracking! I'm going to get you one, and mount it on your machine, when your not paying attention lol Just kidding about mounting, that is. Here's a great video where the camera is used in different settings/vehicles/conditions etc. All you need to do is push the one button for run, then same button for off, that's it!! and you have many great memories to share w/ everyone!
ITS THE GO PRO HERO
