I don't know squat about them but it seems everyone does use the "go-pro" camera so it must be decent. I would be afraid a tree limb would rip it off on the first outing! What compass is everyone using if I might ask....have a true military compass from an ex brother-in-law that was a pilot, works great but looking for something to mount into position. May end up making a mount for the military compass as I need to make a mount for the gps unit also. As the season gets closer it will be time to get into the garage and start doing some customizing to get the SxS ready for trail ridin. I figure I need to be prepared for when 4-tracker gets a bug to go flyin down the road at top speed and we get separated, I need to find my way back, or we might even decide to take different trails ands meet up somewhere....who knows. Just need the right stuff to find my way back if needed. Also might be a time when the wife or grandkids want to go and we will be on our own, just need to cover my bases. Started looking at trail riding maps again but decided I bettr cool off a bit, no sense getting all fired up and ready to go when the season is far off yet. Oh well I can dream anyway!

COOL OFF! were just wishful thinking, but better to be prepared, before the season jumps up and catches us off guard lol It seems like no matter how much time I have before a trip, there's things I wished I had more time to get together!
You saw my compass and how I watched it constantly and always kept perfect directions, never got lost, and could always rely on it! Walmart's always has them in stock. If you remember, I mounted it next to my throttle, in perfect view, where I never had to take my eyes off the trail, no matter how fast I was going. I mounted on a pc of rubber foam, to keep vibrations down (not Styrofoam that rips easily, use the soft rubber type like for thin cheap knee pads) cut the same dia as the compass and use 100% silicone to glue both compass and rubber. Put it in an area as close to your vision to the road, like dash or steering column, but to be able to glance down onto the dial, not at a angle from the side, and make sure its level both directions. then taped it down for 2 days without disturbing it. I made a mistake last year on my other quad, by using Styrofoam and finally peeled off.

Another reason for the rubber foam, is if your mounting it on an angle, or not level surface, you can cut the foam making a flat level base for compass.

Thanks for the notes, havent decided just yet but have a lot to think about. I find it real easy to get turned especially in heavy cover. Had a great sense of direction in my younger days but as I get older my builtin compass needle is getting quite sticky! The gps helps when comming to a crossroad but knowing the general direction is a big help once you have an idea where your going. To darn cold to go sit in my buggy and try to figure out where this stuff needs to go right now.....

I had a cheap self-adhesive compass and self-adhesive thermometer stuck on the headlight pod of one of my quads next to the speedometer. They both eventually fell off and I started taking my Normark compass with me. I've probably had it 35 years and it still worked last year but now it looks like all the liquid leaked out. I found some pictures online. It's about 2 1/4" wide and 2 1/2" tall. You can fold it and put it in your pocket, or open the lid and it has 2 long pins in the lid. They're springy and under tension. I used to stick the pins in and out through the pocket of my hunting coat and lock the ends of the pins back in the lid. It never came loose no matter what. I could fold it flat against my chest and flip it down to look at it. I was going to start putting it in my pocket more often when I ride but now it's broken. I wanted to buy another one but it looks like they quit making them. When I was a kid I had a Marble's brass compass made in Gladstone way up in the U.P. but they quit making compasses too. I'll probably get a Cammenga wrist compass. I don't need tritium and would probably save 10 bucks by getting the government issue phosphorescent model. Cammenga is the world's largest manufacturer of military compasses and the official supplier of the tritium lensatic compass to the U.S. Military. They're made in 4-tracker's neck of the woods in Dearborn. If I ever buy tritium gun sights I'm getting them from Cammenga's sister company, Night Fision. They use use 30% more tritium than leading competitors so they start out brighter and stay bright longer. Plus you can get them with different colored rings around the tritium part.

I forgot to mention earlier, if you want to avoid spring trail flooding stay away from Gladwin for awhile after spring starts. But if you want to play in the mud, go as soon as the snow melts. If you look at the trail map and compare it to the State Wildlife/Game Areas maps on this page you'll see why. South of M-61 most of the trail is inside Molasses River Flooding No.3 State Wildlife Management Area, but the scramble area is 1/2 mile outside of it. North of M-61 the 3 mile long route is outside of the State Wildlife Management Areas, but the trail is half inside and half outside of Molasses River Flooding No. 5 State Wildlife Management Area, and that's right next to Bently Marsh Flooding State Wildlife Management Area. It mostly dries up in the summer but usually had some small mud holes I went around when I rode there years ago. The north part of the trail looped around farther east way back when, but they closed that part of the loop and made a narrow loop on what was left open to the west. I used to go there sometimes when I rode alone because I didn't like The Mounds and that's the closest trail. Google Maps says I can get to the Gladwin exit in 63 minutes and it's only 10 miles from there. They say it's 1 hour 13 minutes from my house to the parking lot but they don't know how fast I drive.

Ram Mounts should have something for your GPS. If they don't make one specifically for it, they have universal mounts. They make phone mounts, camera mounts, cup holders, and spotlight mounts too.

I already have a ram mount, have them in my boat and SxS Having a bigger gps on its way, I have to change where the gps is located. The small unit was mounted overhead but was difficult to see with my bifocal glasses. Need to mount this new unit lower so it will be easier to acess. Going to try and make some sort of a shelf or console to mount the gps and compass. Not sure how high or low it needs to be until I can set in position and see what options I have. As a precision toolmaker for over 50 yrs I tend to get very fussy about how things look and how they work. The ram mounts are great but pricey...big time. All the ram mounts I have were bought at the bargain cave and garage sales for about half price and that is still expensive! Will be awhile before some idea bites me, so keep throwing ideas my way...I do appreciate them
