Default honda 250x trans. problems?

i have an '87 250x. all the gears work fine except when i'm in third. when i give it a little gas in third it is okay but as soon as i begin to open up the throttle my chain jerks and my quad doesn't really go. I just put on an entire new clutch except the basket and new chain and sprockets. Anyone got any idea what's wrong? any clues on how to fix it? I just finished building mt quad after a year and the only thing i didn't check was the trans. because i don't have the tools to split the case. I could probably get the tools if i needed to. thx.

If I remeber right, 2nd and third gear were weak on the 87-88 250x. One of the mags a few years ago wrote something like "if thay haven't gone out yet, they will". I've been lucky with mine so far. Thats all I can remember right now...guess i'm having a senior moment. Haz

You dont need any special tools to tear that motor apart except a flywheel puller. I have a complete tranny for that to if you need any parts.

Well, I got the problem fixed. Want to know how? I sold it! I got interested in cars. My cr250 is for sale as well. Good luck with your problem. I did research it more though and I decided that the teeth got stripped of the 3rd gear because it was the gear I always jumped in and I always gave it full throttle as the tires touched the ground. Theoretically the only problem would be the broken gear but the pieces could have gone who knows where as well. Your best bet might be to get a good used 300ex tranny on ebay. I think it may fit your cylinder and line up with the mounts. Double check that though. If you do fix it post what you did because I am curious. good luck -Ben

Haz is right 3rd gear was really weak on these and will go out, gauranteed. The only fix is to split it and put in a new gear.
