If you don't like the thumb saver...
Goto Dunhams or some other sports shop and buy one of those spring loaded grips (that you squeeze). Once your forearms and hands are conditioned well enough they won't get as sore as easy. Try 5 sets of 25, switch hands after each set.
Also, try thicker gloves.
