I would like to flat track my KFX 400 this year. Can someone reccomend an a-arm, rim, tire, shock, and swingarm set up that will get me started down the right path? Thanks in advance for your help.

 

What kind of tracks will you be running? Short, long? Flat track, TT? Loose, hard pack? How much do can you spend?

 

Thanks for the reply. I will be running flat tracks. Most of the tracks on the schedule are short and clay. There are a few 1/2 milers at the local fairgrounds as well. I should mention I did race this year on the ice and already have Elka shocks an a rear lowering kit (still need to get it a bit lower). I have also put on a CT Pipe, Jet Kit, and K&N Filter set up. The set up worked OK, but I am guessing a shortened swing arm and a decent set of A-arms will help me in the dirt as well as on the ice. Thanks for responding and I look forward to any advice you can give.

 

I would start with the setup you have now, then buy parts as you need them. Lower is not always better. Same thing for wider. That is why good flattrack setups are adjustable. My A-arms are fully adjustable, my axle is adjustable 4", my ride height is adjustable 6-8", etc. My point is, spending money to widen it, shorten it, and lower it might not help you. I raced against a pretty much stock (stock motor, a-arms, axle) banshee and he would beat me every time just because his setup stock worked for him.

CWIRA in central Wisconsin for ICE and it will District 16 for Flat Track. Tracks are Atwater, Wilmont, Gravity Park, Aztalan, and a few 1/2 milers at fairgrounds. Should be a good time.

Tires you should use would be American Racers. Once again, size is all in personal preference. I ran the 8" wide rears and switched to the 10's and they made me push due to my riding style. However, many other racers love the 10's especially on 4 strokes.

AlkyburninX has steered you in the right direction. We've always started off with stock a-arms, axle, etc., to see where we were at on setup, plus it's cheaper, initially. Changes have been made as we saw a need.

One thing I've noticed is that newcomers to flattracking have a tendency to lower the front of the quad too much.

I don't know what you weigh, but that will factor into whether or not you'll need a shortened swingarm. My son weighs about 150 lbs. and on our Banshee, we've had trouble getting traction with a stock length swingarm. A -3 has really helped out in that area.


Tire size is somewhat dependent on how much horsepower you have (whether it's a modded machine or not). A lot of the 4 strokes (400-450cc) tend to run 8 inch wide tires around here. Some do run 10 inch wide tires on heavily modded 4 strokes. 4 strokes tend to hook up better than two strokes and don't always need as much tire. A close friend runs 10" wide on his 440EX.

On my son's Banshee, we run 10" wide tires.

My preference for tires is the Hoosier. We have both American Racer and Hoosier. I think the Hoosier is a better quality tire.
