How do I make my skid plate stay on in Desert Race
#1
Hi,
We are doing the BITD Henderson 400 Race. Last year our swing arm skid plate came off on the first lap, so after a few hours the rocks broke the chain!
It is a Raptor 660 with a Lonestar +2 swinging arm and will get a pro armour 1/4" thick plate.
We are coming over from the UK to do this race, so it is a very expensive hobby, so any ideas welcome to allow us to finish this year!
Thanks
Dean

Ok this will work..but if you ever wanna take it off..it will be kinda hard to get off..you will just have to be carefull and not strip the bolt heads when you try to take it off..
Ok Get some JB weld..Put a some on all the bolt threads...put them back in and tighten them up..let set for one day..to set up..
Now it will not come off..just becarefull when you go to take the bolts out next time you need them off..The JB weld will brake loose...but its hard to do..with out stripping you bolt head..

Just avoid the rocks!!
I use lock tite but my problem is not the bolts backing out but just breaking the skid plate itself. I repaired and welded it last time but still broke it at the last race, so now I am building a whole new one that I hope will be much stronger.
ATV desert racing
Good luck and let us know how it goes!!

Hey warwgn,
I was just looking at your photo page, and found out that we are both ranked #9 in our state. Except I'm #9 on the bikes, and you are #9 on quads. I had two amatures and six experts beat me in points this year, which means a #9 is on my bikes number plates for next year. And talk about your coincidences, my 16 year old son is also ranked #9 in our state, in the quad class. Seems like there are a whole lot of #9's around here, LOL.
In regards to the skid plate coming off problem. Is Dean still using the stock size mounting hardware with his Lonestar swingarm? I know that we could not keep a skidplate (any skidplate) on our YFZs if we used the stock sized hardware to attach them, because the bolts would just break at the first big impact. We use a small but very strong skid plate from AJ's All Terrain Products (sold via Parts Unlimited dealers), with all mounting points re-drilled and tapped for 7/16" grade 8 zinc plated hardware. I seriously think we would tear the whole swingarm off before tearing the skidplate off now. That skidplate isn't going anywhere.
