Dead Engine Starts
#1
Does anyone have any tips for getting good dead engined starts (especially with kickstart quads)? I've been practicing my starts, but I'd like to know what I can do to start off quicker. So far I've only run one race, and I got a 2 kick start (last into the first turn). Passing in the woods is pretty hard, so I'd like to be able to get a decent start.

Mabe try this, dont know how good it will work or if it will at all but it sounded good to me: Put it in 2nd, when you start it pin the throttle and dump the clutch and sit down all in one motion, if you do it right you might gain an advantage over the ones that start in 1st? Defintely want to practice it before hand, would blow to stall it. Anyways.. Worth a try?

First it helps to have your bike warmed up GOOD before the race, If everything is setup right on the engine it should start on the first kick. Some riders dont bother with the clutch (it can be done, I cant do it, but it can be done) they just leave it in 1st or 2nd and kick it hard, bike fires up and launches forward. Other than that, practice is about the only thing to do.

Here's a trick that I use, but might not work for others.
First I make sure the bike is warmed up, then I push the kick starter down one time( not trying to start, just to get some fuel in engine), I leave mine in 2nd gear(less time robbing to shift). Then when its time to go, it takes one kick to start, and rather than dumping the clutch-i feather mine to keep wheels from spinning(more traction)and sit back on the seat.Try this a few times first to see if works for you! hope this helps.

one more tip here! if you're trying to get the holeshot!
if you have a flagman thats holds a board, or flag "up" then drops it down to start the race...... "watch his/or her elbow" it'll drop down first when they go to wave the flag/board. Worked almost everytime for me!
