Help with suspension settings and axle recomendations
#1
Hey just wondering if any one out there could give me a few tips on setting up the suspension for motocross style racing on my ds650 as I'm having trouble bending axles and rims! And if I decide to go with an after market axle which one should I go with? Either that our I will sell the ds and get something that can handle motocross style racing because thats the main reason for purchaseing a quad in the first place! I don't feel I'm even jumping half as for as I should And my axle is bent probably a good 2 inches. Does anyone think this machine is just to heavy for this kind of thing?

The DS is an awfully heavy machine for MX racing. Bending & breaking stuff would likely be a regular occurrance.
If you want to try to keep it and race, you'll need a set of beadlocks or reinforced wheels, you'll still probably have to run a lot more air in them than the 250R or 400EX guys - which is going to beat you up a bit.
An aftermarket axle is probably also going to be necessary. Be careful though, some are known for breaking, even on the lighter bikes.
I've also heard that the control arms might be the next weak point you find.
As far as suspension setup, you want lots of compression and rebound damping. You'll likely want to upgrade to a set of shocks built specifically for MX racing.
If you're really into MX, you might start looking for an old 250R you can build up. You'll probably end up with less money in it, and you'll end up with a bike better suited to what you plan on doing with it.
