Good 250R mods for RACING
#1
OK heres the deal, I have a stock 88 250R and in 2 years I can race it (I'm only 14 they wont allow me to race till I'm 16). I will be racing MX, when I'm not racing I am riding trails (not tight trails). What mods should I get I know the basics like tires rims pipe reeds and shocks but what else should I get? I am looking to improve on all parts of my R suspension, power, handling, and so on. BTW I have to keep it under 266cc. Thanks, Zeb.

Along with a good chest protector if you don't have one(baseball-sized roost to the chest hurts!),for tires go with 18/20 inch rears, a good 19 inch front set, a ZPS style suspension, pipe, reeds, a good set of bars to your comfort, and practice as much as you can (most tracks practices don't have any age restrictions). A good practice schedule will do wonders for your lap times.

I think it is really cool you are getting into quad motocross. I got my 250R when I was 14, and started racing right away (local races here in Las Vegas). I'm 16 now, and I'm just now completing the finishing touches on my Lonestar 'dream-machine'. Hopefully I'll be competing in a GNC or two next year, and if not that, then maybe a stadium event (depending on how much practice time I get in at the track).
Anyway, if possible, I would practice at a local mx track on your stock R to make sure you want to invest in it (for me it only took one lap around the track on my stock R to know I wanted to get into it).
Gear is very important: Helmet, chest protector, gloves, jersey, pants, goggles, boots and kidney belt at the least.
Basic fix-ups first: Tires, wheels, bars, broken levers, etc... Basically anything that you think needs replacing.
Suspension before motor (in my opinion): I saved up and went with wider a-arms, axle, and TCS shocks before I even touched the motor. These components will reduce the beating of motocross, and make you a faster rider. You'll have more confidence going into corners fast, and big jumps won't be a worry. Riding on a stock-motored quad may make you faster in the long-run anyway. While you have your quad apart awaiting the new suspension, I would definetely beef up the frame with extra gussets in all the major stress points, and check for any cracks. (I went through 3 stock frames in one year of racing motocross, even after beefing them up.)
Motor-mods (after you progress): An exhaust, aftermarket reed valve, and air filter first. Do some research on what's good and what isn't before buying. I ended up having my motor ported, head shaved, and bored to a 265cc.
A frame: I don't care what anybody says... If you stay in motocross long enough you're gonna have to buy an aftermarket chassis eventually. I kept telling myself that I would just keep buying $300 stock frames and beef them up every 6 months to a year. Easier said than done. It isn't worth the time and effort of swapping frames over and over.
Cool if you read my whole reply. If not, I don't blame you... It's like 9 years long.

I agree with the above posts. SUPENSION above motor. Suspension will make your lap times much faster. I would save up and by the best suspension setup you can. I would reccomend the new Houser Arms with Axis or Elka shocks. Its alotta money, but worth it. If you have any more questions feel free to email me.

Here is a quick rundown of things to do to your quad in order from first to last:
1. nerf bars (DG aluminum are the strongest)
2. kill switch
3. 18" rear tires, preferably on 8" wheels with bead locks
4. 19" front tires on offset wheels
5. extended rear axle
6. steering stabilizer
7. rear shock, PEP ZPS
8. front shocks, PEP ZPS
9. aluminum handle bars, Renthals, pick a bend you like. dont get the motorcycle bend, which is too low and forward for a quad.
10. Engine - pipe & silencer, larger carburetor, then porting.
Take care of the handling first, then when you get the motor done you we be alot faster.

U sound alot like me.Except I had a bone stock 86 R.
Anyway basicly I messed up bad.I went motor before suspension.Well After 1 race I was so beat up I decided that mx racing wasn't for me.THen I went ahead lifted weights for a while got into shape got new wider A-arms,new shocks and a durablue extended axle.I was alot faster and not half as beaten up.
I have White bros's white power shocks with adjustable piggybacks up front and a wp rear shock with remote adjustable res.I got JD performance A-arms and a durablue eliminator axle. The thing is a different bike!It handles and jumps so well when I ride my 300ex I think I am riding a tricycle! It is really really awesome.I can't wait to get an aren's 88 lenght swingarm on there.
For my motor I had it ported, bored .020 with a wiseco piston a set of boyesen pro series carbon fiber reeds an FMF pipe and silencer also I got a uni filter. It is really really fast now.Runs even with piped shee's.(if they can hook up.
For tires I went with 18/11/8 holeshot mx's on mitchell .190's and for fronts I went with 21/7/10 holeshot's on wide off-set ITP .190's.This tire combo works awesome on a track but they get flats really easy. They I put 20/11/9 6 ply razr's on the rear and stock 250r tires and wheels on the front. This setup works great.
I could go on and on but I won't.
But everyone is right suspension before motor! And get your qaud in decent running order first.
