I don't care what kind of paper that your Dad and Mother would sign saying that it is OK for you to race. If you got hurt, that piece of paper that they signed is worthless and there(promoter) insurance would not cover them when you suied. I am not saying that you would sue but, someone else would and then they(promoter) would loose everything. You would not even have to have a good lawyer to win. It is about the same as you Dad signing a letter saying that it is OK for you to be driving a car. Would it be anygood when you get pulled over by the police for driving under age, what is the judge going to say to you and your Dad? The insurance policy that is issused for a race says that noone under the age of 16 will be racing a large size quad, If the promoter lets this happen the insurance for the race is canceled. When it comes to letting you ride or having insurance for a race guess which one I /promoter will take.
To get the age limits changed it would take a act of Congress to get it changed. We tried to get it changed this past year and it was voted down, but we will try again this year.

In our race series (New England ATV - MX) the age groups were as follows...

0-90cc up to 12 years old
91-300 (air cooled) min age 12
anything else over 16.

We raced 3 tracks (including Southwick) and 2 provided insurance for us while one other required us to find our own. Other than a committee member having to take time off from work and measure the track, I do not think the ages listed above caused any problems.

Now this could be that we stated before getting insurance that these were the age restrictions and that a "full sized" quad was only going to be ridden by people over 16.

Of course all this changed this year. We are going to be AMA sanctioned and need to follow the AMA rules on ages. So basically the 0-90 class is gone (only one 50cc quad and all riders are under 12) and the "blaster class" will be cut back by 80%.

As for being under 16 and racing a full sized quad, I agree with those rules on ages. I am sure a few kids cheated the system in our series and were successful. Only way I say this is because a lot of them got caught and made a fuss.

tprender - what rules did you guys try and change?

I do not know if at the GNCC races they will be checking ID's this coming year. Rita might start doing it after all of the problems that happened at the GNC races last year with under age riders. Maybe they will be checking, maybe not. Rita just wants to cover herself if someone get's hurt and wants to sue.
What we tried changing last year was the ages and the cc's. I don't remember what the sizes and other were, because this was back in Oct this was done. And we will try again, hopefully we will have better luck this year. I don't like the age limits, but I have to live with them.

Do you guys ever think they could have sorta a "prove yourself track" where ya have to beet a time and not wreck doing it? I couldn't promis ya i wouldn't wreck but i know for sure i could make the time limit(unless it was set by Bill Balence running full out) Also whats wrong with Sighning a bunch of papers after you pass that course that releases me from everything?

The age limits are out of date and need to be changed. I'm 15 and I race a 250R in every non AMA event I can find. Even though I have a driver's liscense in Mississippi, I still can't race AMA unless I get a 90. I've been dieing to race the Loretta's GNCC, but I guess I'll have to wait. The race is April 19, and my birthday is in May. Oh well, just the government at work again, trying to protect me. Land of the free...

NO this is not a new rule,it's just never been a problem before,ya see,,,I will speak of the GNC not GNCC as thats where I'm at but the age rules are the same.At the GNC we parents sort of had an "unwritten rule" about letting the kids race, theory: if your younger kid beat my older kid he deserved it.BUT,,this year a rider got hurt and hid "daddy" threw a $hit fit and protested the other kids age, thus opening a can of worms. There are conflicting rumors on whether an actuall protest was filed, you see, unless a protest is filed, there are no questions. And from what I hear there wasn't a formal protest!""If"" that is true, there should have not been any asking of age.On the other hand the referee did offer the kids to tell the truth w/no consiquences, meaning that some prefered to lie about their age after being asked, and even offered to the referee a fake birth cirtificate, thus these riders were kicked out of AMA competition for a full year. The ones telling the truth wasn't allowed to race + their points pulled, but was NOT kicked out for a yr.(the ref was very fair in this)I HATE TO SAY THIS but,,,If you can get a birth cert. that dont look fake, that works,"obviously" the 200/300 air cooled class winner this yr (2001) was NOT 16 but 15,but "daddy bigbux" found a great fake birth certificate,so after the above mentioned whinner took out 1/2 the class for age,a liar got to win! What was the point!?? I'm going trail riding :-P

We lost the cochranton poker run because some people couldn't follow the rules. I don't want to lose the GNCC or the GNC because a few folks can't follow a very simple rule that is put forth by the AMA which sanctions and provides the means to get insurance for all our events.
