Like the ones we had in high school football, the neck collars keep your head from coming too far forward,or too far back in a sudden stop (crash). Could mean the difference between a headache and a snapped neck!!
I applaud you for your safety mindedness !!!!

I have purchased one as well and wear it in every race I participate in. It takes a little getting used to having it there, but well worth it. It has saved me from many days of having a sore neck from landing wrong, crashing, etc... Its nice to see more and more people becoming safety minded when it comes to ATV's and racing. It is definately needed because, afterall, its your life and body you are protecting, and you want to be able to keep racing for as long as possible.

They can also help to prevent broken collar bones. Sometimes during a crash if you hit hard enough, the helmet is shoved over so far that the lower edge of the helmet actually contacts the collar bone. If the hit is hard enough it can break the collar bone. The brace provides a cushioning effect between these (2) area's to lessen the impact.

The brace also keeps your head from being able to bend all the way backwards or forwards which could have the potential to break your neck. Although that is very unlikely, unfortunately it has happened before. Racing can be a dangerous sport and if you, or your quad isn't in top form, you shouldn't race. There will always be more races but you will be out of the racing for much longer if you get hurt. I made the mistake of racing without rear brakes, thinkin it would be ok for one race. Well, I ended up going over a berm and braking my collar bone. I wanted to race so bad because I didn't want to skip a race in that series and then I ended up missing the entire series instead of just that one race. If you race, make sure you have a helmet, boots, and knee and shin gaurds are very good to have. In my last wreck, my knee was hurting pretty good and I would hate to imagine what would have happend to my knee if I didn't have the knee and shin gaurds on. Also, I've run over my leg before and probably would have broken my ankle if I didn't have boots, so don't go out there in your old pair of work boots and a bicycle helmet and think that you are putting safety first . But it sounds like you are pretty well aware of safety while racing. GOOD JOB!
