When I read, "The logic of going side by side into the puddle makes sense until it all goes awry:", I actually said to myself, out loud, "That makes no sense at all." I don't make talking to myself a habit but, huh??? Logic? I thought maybe they would sideswipe a little, but at least one of them got away unscathed.

Around here when it all goes awry- you can count on someone teaching you a valuable lesson in the interaction of matter. We like to think that they're putting their bodies and machines through the wringer for the betterment of mankind.
