Your truck speedo is off buddy.
I have ridden with a modded 04Rappy350 and my Warrior is the same exact speed top end, and I weigh about 40lbs more than the guy I was riding with.
My quad was clocked, by radar at 63mph when it had 15/40 gearing. I've since switched back to the stock gears of 13/40 and I'm likely topping out at just around 60 on a good day. My father runs a Scrambler 500, and his speedo says he tops out at about 60, and on the open road I start to gain on him at top speed. Not much but just enough to know that you are going about 2mph faster.
The thing is that top speed is more directly controled by your gearing, your FINAL DRIVE RATIO, and your TERMINAL VELOCITY. That's not just a fancy saying, it's a fact of physics. There are an endless number of complicated formulas used to figure out things like this but in simple terms, you can't go faster than your gearing alows, it's as simple as that!
With proper gearing, it's possible to make a any machine acheive amazing top speeds. You could put a 10 speed into an F150 and with enough running room you might hit 200mph.....eventually that vehicle would hit it's terminal velocity not matter how much HP and gearing you put into it......But it also wouldn't be a machine that would not be practical at all, and it might only work five times before the wind tore it apart.
But once the engine meets maximum HP output, and the gears meet their end, that's it. The stock gearing in a Rappy, or ANY quad for that matter will just not allow it to hit 80mph. The only way to get more speed is bigger gears or more engine top end. No factory quad comes off the show-room floor hitting 80mph.
You have one of two things going on here:
1.] Your wife misread the speedo, perhaps you were not exactly paced at that very moment.
2.] Your speedo is off a few mph on your truck. Most vehicle speedo's are between 2-5mph off of exact radar speed. So many variables going into a vehicle exact top speed reading at the speedo, that often the gearing the differential, does not match the gearing in the little plastic gear in the tranny that drives the speed sensor. 2-5mph is accepted by most manufacturers as within tolerace for proper working condition.
Now if your truck has bigger tires on it than what the little gear in the tranny is designed for, that's will mean another 2-3mph at the least, but could easily be 5 or even 10mph. If the tires are stock on your truck, your speedo still might be off for other reasons.
