yfz or a 450r?
#1
In the next week or so I will be buying one of these quads, although I am not sure which one to get. I am a 130lb woman and I love the way the 250r rides. I want the best possible performance, but also want a comfortable ride. I do all kinds of riding and I love to jump and just flat out go fast. I love the reliability of the honda, but the yfz seems like it just may be a little bit better. Please help. Thanks

My buddy has the YFZ and I have the 450R, so I have put in some time on both. Honda built more of an "all-around" machine (that can be modded to do many things), and Yamaha built more of a specialized MX bike. For me, the R has the better handling frame, and the YFZ has the faster engine, but I always pick handling over power, so I choose the R!
I like the R for the open desert (this bike has won both the Baja 1000 and Vegas to Reno, need I say more!), dunes, and more open trails. It is geared to tall for tighter trails, but you can fix that with a sprocket change.
The YFZ is a good open desert and dune machine. The front suspension is REAL stiff, and makes for a MISERABLE trail ride! I kept saying this from day one, but all the YFZ lovers said I was crazy. Turns out, Yamaha is softening the front end up for the 05 model year, so obviously now even Yamaha agrees with me! For play riding (jumping and freestyle), the YFZ would probably be more fun.

I am confused! Does that make it special because it won the Baja 1000 and Vegas to Reno?

Darn right!! Baja is 1000 miles NON-STOP, and Vegas to Reno is 500 miles NON-STOP. These are the toughest races on the continent. Says something very important about the durability of the machine!
Sorry, the YFZ's aren't really doing anything in desert endurance racing (a fair number of them enter however)! Maybe you can tell us why???

If a machine will stand up to the rigors of an endurance racing, it certainly can stand the abuse a recreational rider will dish out! The bike that won Baja by the way, was basically bone stock.

If you do a lot of trialriding then you might through in the 05 predator...I meen...they have the speed...good handling...I've seen preds on the mx track and now they have reverse which is also a plus for when your out on the trails.
