I have been wanting a quad for some time now, and now I might be getting one. The only problem is price and that I have no way of transporting it anywhere.

Any Ideas

If you aren't of driving age & your parents are going to pop for the quad, I'll bet they have considered that problem and must be planning to transport it for you. If so, your question should be, how far and how often?. Other than that, maybe you can cultivate a friendship with another rider (or parent) willing to take you along for a slight contribution to fuel expense.
Whatever you do, don't be tempted to ride on the street so you don't end up in that well-known establishment your town is noted for.

I am 19 and I would be the one paying for the quad. I'm at college right now and have some friends (Older) that go ATV'ing. I have it arranged that I could leave the quad at his house with direct access to trails. The transporting I would need to do is to tkae it for service if needed. I would like to have it home for winter break then back to school fir the spring then back home for the summer. Total it would be about 5 or 6 times a year, excluding any special trips. My house is about one hour away from school

Well, in that case, I would recommend that you buy a shop manual for whatever quad you select. The vast majority of service needed on a quad can be done yourself at a very reduced cost, given the going labor rate of $50 or more per hour. The one exception to that would be the initial service on a new machine to ensure the warranty requirements, in which case you might borrow a trailer, pickup or even rent a small U-Haul as a last resort. After that, doing your own maintenance is both educational & rewarding, not to mention the afore-mentioned savings. Barring any serious mishaps, the maintenance on most brands of quads consists mainly of fluid changing & minor adjustments.

I'm not sure what your financial situation is right now, but I know that when I was going to college it was pretty tight for me.

I saw a lot of motorcyles, watercraft, and other toys for sale in the college newspapers when I was going to school. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that you need to make sure you can afford a toy like a quad right now. There is nothing more heartbreaking than having to sell your new toy because it has become apparent that you can't really afford it, after only a few months of ownership (BTDT).

Now if you determine that you can afford a new quad, or get a deal on a used one, I agree that getting a service manual and doing some of the work yourself will save time/money. I also agree that taking it in for it's 1st service is a must if it is a new quad to retain warranty rights.

Good luck with your education.

Well my financial sitiuation is actually pretty good right now. The thing is I plan on getting a motorcycle in the spring time. I have pretty much concluded I can afford to spend about $2500 on an ATV and $2500 on a cycle in the spring time. Before I was looking at buying as $5000 quad and I realized that is not going to happen. But about 5k total i shoulfd be able to afford. Transportation may a a slight problem, but it can be arranged.

Now I activly pursuing a used or new quad that is about $2500. Hopefully 250cc or bigger and 4X4 if possible. Any recommmendations?

BTW, Thanks hot_shoe_cv and sqooze for your help so far.

If your looking for a 4wd atv around 250cc's, I would suggest an older Honda fourtrax 300. They may not be the sportiest thing on four wheels, but their reliability is legendary. You may find a newer Yamaha timberwolf in that price range as well.

If you can do without the 4wd, look for recons, warriors, trailblazer, trailboss, mojave, lakota.

I agree with the earlier post, make sure you can afford it.
When I was in college I was living off of Ramen Noodles!!!
If I had $5000.00 I would be saving it for something else like an emergency, and buy the quad with the money you make from the degree you get after college.
I just bought an '85 ATC 250sx after coming real close to buying a brand new yamaha big bear 4x4, as I see the trike sit in the garage for a week at a time going unused because I don't have time to ride it I thank God I didn't spend 5k on it. Plus I have have a great time with the trike when I get the chance to ride it.
I'm guessing that you are probably a sophomore in college, you probably won't have to much time to ride either.

Ramen Noodles, now that brings back some memories..

When times where good and I had some extra money I would mix a can of tuna with a can of cream of mushroom soup and serve it over toast.

If you plan on serving this at your next get-together I would suggest a bottle of Boone's Farm (Country Quentcher comes to mind).

Wow, times are not that tight for me. I am a sophomore and I'm living in housing on-campus where we have our own kitchen and everything. I have been alive for over a month now by cooking my own meals.I do have lots of Ramen Noodles though.

My financial situation is really pretty good. I have about $1300 saved up to spend for the entire year at college. I can go home and work at my job and get about $60 (after taxes) per day. I have my Wedenesdays off, no classes, so I can go home and work about once a month. Right now I'm looking a an older 2wd Honda for $1600. I would get a loan to pay for the quad and monthly payments would be about $50. So one day of work a month will cover the ATV and I still have my other money to spend as well.
