i was just looking at some older Honda 250r or Suzuki lt250r. i was just wondering if these things are respectable in the power and speed range. i consider myself a decent rider and want something with some power on reserve when heavy trail or track riding. I know the lt250r will not stand up against its bigger bro the lt500r (which would be my top choice) but im still hoping for something respectable.

 

My buddy has a 250R, and he went riding with two guys who both had piped Predetor 500's. He said they couldn't even touch him!

 

They are very fast in a straight line. They are not the best on the trail or track. The powerband is very small so you end up switching gears A LOT. They take more skill to ride.

 

Buy the trx if possible. Theres alot more aftermarket parts availible.

thanks for the help. im just looking for something cheap to possibly rebuild. i found some of the 250's for $2500. Like I said though, i want something that will have the power to get me through, and to make sure i don't get bored. haha.

The 250r dominated the track for almost two decades. Your 400ex is based on the trx's geometry

 

And has been getting spanked by the EX's engine ever since. Why would anybody think it's a better trail quad when you can't lug it or a better racer when the 400ex doesn't even compete on the track anymore? Fastest in a straight line doesn't translate into fast lap times. The 250r's at home in the sand, drags and open spaces. It's a great quad. Fun to ride. But it is was it is.

 

Spanked by the EX? what are you talking about? What pro rider used an EX engine. Have you ever heard of a powervalve. I can lug my 350 in any gear. Have you ever ridden a 250R? You must be thinking of a banshee! A 250r if properly ported has a pretty good powerband. My buddies have fourstrokes YFZ, 400Ex, raptors and they can't keep up on trails

 

Are we talking about the same machine? Honda TRX250R, not 250X...

The 250R willl walk circles around the 400EX in any situation, and can still hang with every atv out there on the track. Get a clue.
