Which atv for this application

Sounds like you had a machine that was in 4 wheel drive all the time if it was that hard to turn. Newer models have recognized this and are not providing the ability to switch from 2 to 4 wheel drive with the flick of a switch. There are also models that can lock the front wheels together for more traction too... as you move towards the upper end of the models, you get more and more of these nice to have features. Not soon the low end entry level machines.
All this points to having choices on what you are willing to live without.
As for using the ATV as a work tool.. I think you really need to look at how the ATV will be used for the majority of the time. If you NEED it to do many functions that a tractor would normally provide... I'd opt for a used tractor. The ATV at best is going to be a compromise, and the equipment like mowers etc are going to be expensive. You would probably end up spending more for the ATV tools than what a fully equipped tractor would cost, and you would be disapointed in the work the ATV can actually manage to produce.
My advice is to use it as it was intended.. and if you can get by with a less than optimal means of doing work.. then and only then consider the ATV as an option.... but with a loaded Kubota with bucket and backhoe going for under 15K these days.. and used even less... You really will be miles ahead with the right tool for the job....

We do have a couple tractors to use on the place. The atv will be used for misc. runs - people hauling, hauling tools, dragging downed trees out of the woods, spraying berry bushes etc.
For example this weekend, in addition to hauling people around, the atv was used for spraying (has a spray tank on front rack), dragging some limbs to the burn pile, towing a small trailer with misc tools - gas weed eaters, chain saws, axe, shovels, lawn chairs, lunch, beer etc.
A pickup with a canopy would be handy, but it is way too big and heavy to get into many of the areas on the property.

Have you considered the RUV's available these days? Polaris, yamaha, and even Kubota all make a two and sometimes three seater capable of doing what you require, and they have the small footprint you are looking for... Mostly they provide a safe way to include more than one person on board.
